Thor’s space goats are a joke with mythological roots: Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder are Marvel Comics versions of the goats that draw Thor’s vehicle in Norse tradition. Thor: Love and Thunder turns that inheritance into a Viking ship being pulled through space—and a conspicuous running gag. The myth, the comics and the film are related, but they are not the same story.
Why are there space goats in Thor: Love and Thunder?
Director Taika Waititi described the film’s goat boat as “a Viking ship being dragged by goats through space.” In an interview with Uproxx, he also said the goats and the ship-towing idea drew on Norse mythology. That explains the basic image; it does not mean every detail of the movie’s spacefaring boat or comic treatment comes from an ancient source. Read Waititi’s interview with Uproxx.
The goats are also part of Marvel’s existing Thor lore, rather than characters invented for the film. Marvel identifies them as Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, Thor’s goats in the comics. Marvel’s comics history of Thor’s goats traces their appearances.
What are Thor’s goats called?
In Marvel’s comics and in the film, they are Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder. D23 quoted Waititi calling the pair “absolute stars.” Their names belong to Marvel’s adaptation, not to the spellings used in the cited Prose Edda passage. D23’s guide to Thor: Love and Thunder identifies Waititi as the film’s director and co-writer and carries his remark about the goats.

Are Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder from Norse mythology?
Not by those names. The Prose Edda, a medieval source for Norse myth, describes Thor’s goats and says they draw his chariot. In the cited translation excerpt, their names are rendered Tanngniost and Tanngrisnir, with bracketed glosses. English spellings vary across translations and transliterations, so those forms should not be treated as the only correct ones. Read the Prose Edda excerpt hosted by Yale.
The simplest way to follow the connection is as a three-step adaptation:
