The Agency’s Season 1 finale delivers a tense rescue and a consequential betrayal that make the slow build feel worthwhile—if you enjoy character-driven spy drama and can tolerate familiar conventions along the way. It offers meaningful payoff, but not a complete resolution.

The Coyote rescue turns the slow build into action
Martian recognizes that the threat has changed and warns the team to move the operation’s kill zone. The extraction becomes chaotic after Sasha attacks Chekhov, but the revised placement helps the team get Coyote out. As TheWrap’s recap and Ready Steady Cut’s recap describe, the rescue is the payoff to an operation the show has been building across the season.
Danny gets into Tehran
Iranian officials question Danny when she arrives, but her preparation holds and she is permitted to enter Tehran. That answers the immediate question of whether she can make it into the field; the larger purpose of her assignment remains open.

While Martian helps bring the Coyote operation to a successful close, Richardson uses his concern for Sami to recruit him into a double-agent arrangement with British intelligence. The turn makes Martian’s private attachment an institutional vulnerability: he has helped the team succeed, but he is now carrying a secret that could undermine it. The juxtaposition gives the finale its most consequential hook for future episodes.
Does the finale make the season worth watching?
It makes a persuasive case for the season’s slow-burn approach. The rescue gives the extended operation a concrete, high-stakes payoff; Danny’s arrival completes a smaller but important arc; and Martian’s recruitment changes the stakes rather than simply tying up a plot. Ready Steady Cut treats the episode as an effective culmination of the season’s major threads. Malcolm McMillan at Tom’s Guide called it the season’s best episode in his opinion. Those are critical assessments, not evidence of a universal audience response.
Rank #2
The counterargument is real: viewers who want immediate momentum may not consider the payoff worth the wait. In an early-season review for TheWrap, published before the finale, Zaki Hasan criticized the show’s slow pace, familiar spy-drama tropes, and storylines that initially did not cohere. The finale brings several threads into sharper alignment, but it cannot erase the experience of getting there.
Who is most likely to enjoy the ending?
- Good fit: viewers who enjoy spycraft, overlapping plots, and character dilemmas about loyalty, and who are willing to wait for a season-long operation to pay off.
- Less certain fit: viewers who prioritize fast pacing or want every major storyline resolved by the finale.
- Worth noting: the episode gives the season a substantial climax while deliberately setting up further conflict through Martian’s double-agent arrangement.
