These 25 Disney-released films have U.S. theatrical versions rated G, ranked by storytelling, filmmaking, characters, music, influence and lasting appeal. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official Disney or Motion Picture Association ranking. The list includes Pixar films released by Disney and focuses on animated features; it does not claim to cover every eligible title.
What does a G rating mean?
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) defines G this way: “A G-rated motion picture contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that, in the view of the Rating Board, would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture.” The MPA also cautions that “The G rating is not a ‘certificate of approval,’ nor does it signify a ‘children’s’ motion picture.” A rating describes the MPA Rating Board’s assessment; it does not promise that every child will enjoy a film or feel comfortable with every scene.
Disney does not assign the U.S. MPA rating. The Walt Disney Company’s FY2008 corporate responsibility report states that the ratings are set by the MPA, not the releasing studio. Ratings can also depend on the edition and release: D23 notes that some older films were edited for G-rated reissues, while some earlier titles later received PG ratings for video. Check the specific version if the rating matters to your decision.

Correction: The list above accidentally repeats Toy Story 3 and therefore contains only 24 unique films. G-rated Disney releases span many decades, from early animated features to Pixar films. D23’s film listings identify a broad selection of Disney titles as G, and the MPA database lists Toy Story (1995), Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010) and Toy Story 4 (2019) as G. These examples do not mean every film in a franchise qualifies: the MPA lists Toy Story 5 (2026) as PG.
The MPA rating system began in 1968. D23 records The Black Hole (1979) as Disney’s first PG-rated release and The Black Cauldron (1985) as its first animated feature to receive PG. The shift is a reminder that “Disney movie” and “G-rated” are not interchangeable labels.
How this ranking was made
The order weighs story and emotional payoff, animation and filmmaking craft, characters and performances, music, influence and staying power, and appeal across generations. A film’s historical importance can strengthen its case, but does not automatically place it above a more emotionally complete or consistently engaging movie. The list is an editorial selection, not a definitive or official ranking.
