Tenet Review: Five Years Later, Does Christopher Nolan’s Most Confusing Movie Make Sense?

A rewatch clarifies Tenet’s core inversion idea and some scene connections, but Nolan’s time-bending thriller never becomes a perfectly transparent puzzle.

Tenet makes more sense five years later—but not because every turn can be decoded into one definitive explanation. Its core idea and the way some scenes connect are easier to follow once you know what inversion means. The film’s crosscutting still makes action hard to parse, and director Christopher Nolan has said viewers are not expected to understand everything. What becomes clearer on a rewatch is not only the machinery, but how the movie uses time to create a distinctive, sometimes affecting experience.

What does “inversion” mean in Tenet?

In the film, inversion is the device that lets a person or object move backward through time relative to the ordinary forward flow. That means a scene can place forward-moving and inverted participants together: an action that looks like cause and effect in one direction may appear to run backward from another character’s point of view. The Los Angeles Times describes this reversal as an organizing feature of the action and connects it to the film’s palindrome-like structure. Read the 2020 review.

This is a science-fiction premise, not an established method of time travel. In the press notes quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Nolan cautioned, “we’re not going to make any case for this being scientifically accurate.” The film’s language about entropy belongs to its imagined rules; it should not be mistaken for a scientific explanation endorsed by physics. The paper’s interview with physicist Claudia de Rham discusses the distinction between the film’s conceit and real physical possibility.

Does the story become clearer on a rewatch?

Yes, in part. On a first viewing, it is easy to confuse the direction a character experiences time with the order in which the movie shows events. Knowing to keep those two things separate helps make some scene connections and immediate stakes easier to grasp. It does not guarantee that every mechanism or image will become unambiguous.

That difficulty was not simply a failure of viewers to pay attention. The 2020 Los Angeles Times review called the film dazzling but confusing, and RogerEbert.com also criticized how much effort its story demands. In 2024, Nolan said viewers were not meant to understand everything, as reported by The Independent. Some opacity, then, is compatible with the film’s intended experience—but that does not make every moment of confusion satisfying.

What still makes Tenet hard to follow?

Opposing directions share the same scene

When forward-moving and inverted action occupy the frame together, viewers have to work out not just what is happening but which direction each participant is experiencing. The result can be striking to watch and difficult to read in real time. The film asks its action sequences to serve as spectacle and as pieces of a causal puzzle at once.

Mechanics can compete with immediate stakes

Even when the broad premise is understood, tracking the sequence of events can take attention away from the people in them. The movie does not always make the practical meaning of a moment as legible as its visual design. A rewatch can help with orientation, but it cannot make the storytelling friction disappear.

Why does the time structure still have cinematic force?

Nolan’s interest in time is not limited to building a puzzle. Speaking to NPR, he described film’s unusual ability to alter how time appears: “Time is the most cinematic of subjects because before the movie camera came along, human beings had no way of seeing time backwards, slowed down, sped up.” The comment helps explain why inversion is more than a plot rule in Tenet: it gives the camera a way to show something ordinary perception cannot. That formal ambition has an emotional case, too. In its 2025 five-year retrospective, Inverse argued that the film’s fascination with time makes it one of Nolan’s affecting stories. That is a critical judgment, not a settled consensus, but it points to a worthwhile way to revisit the movie: not only by asking whether every mechanism adds up, but by considering what its structure makes a viewer feel. So, does Tenet finally make sense?

The basic premise and some relationships between scenes can become clearer once you distinguish the direction of a character’s experience from the film’s order of revelation. But “finally makes sense” promises too much if it means every image, causal detail, or rule resolves into a single, certain reading. Tenet remains difficult to follow; its strongest rewatch rewards come from seeing how that difficulty is bound up with its formal experiment and, for some viewers, its emotional effect.
