Steve Burton returned to General Hospital as Jason Morgan on Monday, March 4, 2024. PEOPLE’s exclusive first-look image showed Jason dressed in black behind a dumpster, with blood on one hand—a stark reveal for a character viewers had presumed dead after a 2021 tunnel collapse.
What the first-look image showed
PEOPLE’s March 1, 2024 exclusive showed Burton as Jason standing behind a dumpster, dressed entirely in black, with one hand covered in blood. The image offered a visual glimpse of the returning character, but it did not explain the blood or establish what had happened in the scene. The image was credited to Disney/Christine Bartolucci.
When did Steve Burton return to General Hospital?
Burton’s comeback episode aired Monday, March 4, 2024, on ABC. The return had been announced in the final moments of the January 2024 anniversary special, General Hospital: 60 Years of Stars & Storytelling. In a recorded message, Burton told viewers, “Stay tuned. Big things are coming to Port Charles.”
Why was Jason Morgan presumed dead?
Jason had been presumed dead after a tunnel collapsed beneath Cassadine Island in November 2021. PEOPLE reported that he was trying to save his brother Drew, played by Cameron Mathison. TVLine’s February 5, 2024 report likewise noted the collapse and that no body had been recovered. The character’s presumed-dead status set the context for Burton’s return; it was not proof that Jason had died.

What Steve Burton said about coming back
In an interview updated March 4, 2024, with Soap Opera Digest, Burton said, “I’m super-grateful for the opportunity to come back and share myself as a new person.” He described the studio as a place with considerable history in his life and said the cast and crew welcomed him warmly.
The story changed during development
Burton said a change in head writers led the show to reboot the story arc that had originally been planned: “So apparently there was a whole different story planned and then the head writer switch happened and then they kind of rebooted [the story arc].” He also praised co-head writer Elizabeth Korte’s knowledge of Jason’s history. Those comments describe Burton’s account of the writing process, not an independently confirmed production explanation.

Burton’s path back to Port Charles
Burton played Jason from 1991 until leaving the show in 2012, then returned in 2017. He was let go in 2021 after refusing the show’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement. Before announcing his return to General Hospital, he played Harris Michaels on Days of Our Lives in 2023.
In a February 2024 tease reported by TVLine, Burton said he had spoken with the head writers and called the story “sick” and “awesome.” Those were promotional remarks, not a detailed account of Jason’s plot.
