What “best” means in this guide
Albini is often described as a producer, but he preferred the term recording engineer. In that framing, the artist or band makes the creative decisions; Albini’s role is to capture the performance. Albini as an artist: Big Black and Shellac
Albini’s musical legacy also includes records he performed on, rather than engineered for another act. He fronted Big Black and performed in Shellac. Keep those albums in a separate category from the four recording credits above: they show Albini as a band member, not simply as an engineer behind the console. The available sources establish those bands as part of his career but do not identify a specific Big Black or Shellac album as the single best choice, so this guide does not invent a ranked pick.

How large was Albini’s recording legacy?
NME’s 2024 obituary reported that Albini had worked on more than 2,000 albums. That is NME’s estimate of the scale of his projects, not a verified official discography count: NME’s obituary.
