That gives Free listeners more direct ways to start a specific song, but Spotify did not say that every playback restriction was removed or that Free became equivalent to Premium.
What changed for Spotify Free listeners?
Spotify’s September 15, 2025 announcement introduced three named controls:

- Pick & Play: Choose a song in the app and start it.
- Search & Play: Search for a track and start listening.
- Share & Play: Tap a shared track to play it.
Spotify described the update as giving listeners “more control over how you listen.” Its product copy for Search & Play says: “Type in your favorite track and start listening instantly.” Spotify’s announcement is the source for these feature descriptions; it does not establish that every control works identically on every device or account.
Can Spotify Free play any song you search for?
Spotify announced that Free listeners could search for a track and start listening through Search & Play. That is not the same as a promise that every searched-for song will be playable in every circumstance. The announcement does not claim that all limits or account and device differences have disappeared.

Spotify said the changes were rolling out globally, but did not publish a schedule by country, app version, or account. If you do not see the controls, check that your app is up to date and look again in your account; Spotify’s announcement does not give a date by which they would appear for everyone.
What remains different from Premium?
Spotify’s U.S. Premium page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists ad-free music, offline listening, and playing songs in any order as paid-plan benefits. The direct-selection controls announced for Free therefore do not mean that Spotify Free has become unrestricted or identical to Premium.

Why can’t I play a searched-for song on Spotify Free?
Spotify’s announcement confirms the Search & Play feature, but it does not promise the same availability for every account, device, or track. If the control is missing, first check whether your app is current and whether the feature has appeared in your account. A Spotify Community post includes a user asking about being unable to play searched-for songs, but that single anecdote does not establish a widespread or current problem.

Updates that are separate from song playback
Spotify’s September 15, 2026 newsroom update described a setting for excluding kids’ and family music from a listener’s taste profile. With the setting off, a listener can still search for, hear, and playlist that music; the setting concerns recommendations and listening insights, not the 2025 direct-selection controls. Spotify’s taste-profile announcement.
A separate Spotify announcement on May 13, 2026, with updates through July 15, described managed accounts for young listeners on the Free tier. Its statement that those young listeners hear Spotify ads applies to that specific context, not necessarily to every Free listener. Spotify’s managed-accounts announcement.
