Sasquatch Sunset is a 2024 absurdist feature about a family of Sasquatches living through a year in the forests of North America. It is a fictional, surreal character journey—not a nature documentary or a conventional Bigfoot investigation. The film follows the family as it encounters a changing world, using creature performance and wordless storytelling instead of explanatory narration.
What is Sasquatch Sunset about?
The official synopsis describes a Sasquatch family, perhaps among the last of its kind, navigating one year in the misty forests of North America. The film’s premise is a Bigfoot story, but the focus is on the creatures’ daily lives and encounters rather than on people searching for evidence of them. Its distributor describes the journey as absurdist, epic, hilarious and poignant. The official film site
The film was written by David Zellner and directed by David and Nathan Zellner. The official cast listing names Riley Keough, Jesse Eisenberg, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner. Official cast and synopsis
Is it a documentary or a conventional Bigfoot movie?
No. Sundance describes it as a cinematic adventure in a forest, not a nature documentary. The Associated Press characterizes it as a wordless, narrator-less experiment, mixing grotesque comedy with recognizably human behavior. That is a critic’s description of the style, rather than a promise that every viewer will read the film the same way. Sundance Institute interview Associated Press review

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to expect from its style
Expect a deliberately strange, physical performance piece rather than a mystery built around whether Bigfoot exists. The AP review discusses possible readings—as an ecological parable, a story about innocence, or a portrait of natural violence—but says the environmental lesson is unclear. Those are interpretive possibilities, not a single confirmed message from the filmmakers.
In their Sundance interview, the Zellners said, “We’re not interested in being didactic. As long as they’re feeling something, whatever that is, it’s enough.” Asked why the story needed to be told now, the brothers answered, “Because the world needs Bigfoot now more than ever.” Sundance Institute interview

How was the film made?
The Zellners told Sundance that the shoot took place in a remote location and combined a tight schedule with complex creature effects, erratic weather and wild animals. The interview also reports that Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough were committed to their roles. Sundance Institute interview
