For some reviewers, the film’s fervour gives its class-conscious story lift; for others, melodrama and repetition keep it grounded.
What is Sarfira about?
Directed by Sudha Kongara, Sarfira is a Hindi-language film released theatrically on July 12, 2024. Its 2-hour-34-minute story follows Vir Jagannath Mhatre, a former Air Force pilot who sets out to launch a low-cost airline. Akshay Kumar plays Vir, Radhika Madan is his spirited wife Rani, and Paresh Rawal plays aviation tycoon Paresh Goswami, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ catalog listing and The Times of India review.
The premise gives the film an accessible dramatic engine: a man’s attempt to make flying possible for people usually priced out of it. The reviewers also identify class and caste barriers as part of that ambition. In the film’s terms, an airline is not only a business venture but a challenge to who gets to travel—and who is expected to accept exclusion.
Is Sarfira a remake of Soorarai Pottru?
Yes. Kongara remade her own 2020 Tamil film, Soorarai Pottru, in Hindi. Both films draw on G. R. Gopinath’s memoir Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey and the history of Air Deccan, as discussed by Scroll.in and The Indian Express.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That relationship is central to judging the Hindi version. The question is not simply whether it repeats the earlier film, but whether its performances, characterization and emotional register make the story feel newly persuasive. The reviews establish the remake and its shared inspiration, but do not support a detailed scene-by-scene comparison.
Is Sarfira based on a true story?
It is inspired by real-world material, not a documentary or a literal biography. Gopinath’s memoir and Air Deccan’s history provide the background for the airline dream, while Vir Mhatre and the film’s incidents belong to a dramatized screen story. Scroll notes that scenes framed around incidents can become fantastical or overwrought. Viewers looking for Gopinath’s own account can turn to Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey; the film should be approached as interpretation rather than a factual record.

Does the film’s emotional pitch work?
The reviews disagree most sharply over the same quality: Sarfira makes its feelings and stakes emphatic. The Times of India’s Dhaval Roy gave it 3.5/5, praising its energy, inspirational premise and treatment of class and caste while noting repetition in the screenplay. Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review objected to creaky melodrama, hero-centered framing and the age gap between the leads. The displayed rating differs between the article metadata and body, so it is better not to reduce that review to a single score.
Scroll’s Nandini Ramnath credited the film’s entrepreneurial determination but criticized its heightened obstacles and casting. Ankit Ojha’s review for The National rated it 2/5, finding the style loud and the film overlong. Taken together, these responses make the emotional volume a matter of taste as well as execution: it can turn aspiration into a crowd-pleasing rush, or make the drama feel over-insistent.

Gupta captures one of the film’s more grounded pleasures in her review: “The nicest part of the film, like in the original, are the ordinary folk who come out of the first flight, their faces lit-up and beaming.” That is Gupta’s critical observation, not dialogue from the film. It points toward the strongest idea in Sarfira: the meaning of flight is clearest when the story turns from its determined hero to the people who stand to benefit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is Sarfira for?
The film is a better fit for viewers receptive to a fervent, mainstream underdog drama than for those seeking restrained realism. Its subject gives the uplift a concrete social purpose, but the critical split suggests that its emphatic style may either intensify that purpose or overwhelm it. Fans of Soorarai Pottru may want to compare the Hindi film’s characterization and emotional restraint for themselves rather than expect a wholly separate story.
