Yes: Akiva Goldsman confirmed that a darker preview version of Batman Forever exists, and later said it remains incomplete. He called it “Preview One” at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024—not a finished, director-approved cut or an announced release. In a 2025 update, he said he is still lobbying for it.
What did Akiva Goldsman say at SDCC 2024?
During the Producers on Producing panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 26, 2024, screenwriter and producer Akiva Goldsman confirmed the preview’s existence: “Yes, it does exist. There is a preview called ‘Preview One.’” Gizmodo reported his remarks from the panel.
Goldsman described the version as darker than the 1995 theatrical film: “It was darker. Bruce was haunted by his past. He felt guilt.” The remarks identify a preview with a different tone; they do not establish that it is a completed alternate film or that Joel Schumacher approved it as a final cut.
What is Batman Forever: Preview One?
Batman Forever is the 1995 film directed by Joel Schumacher, with Goldsman among its credited writers, according to DC’s official film page. “Schumacher Cut” is common shorthand in coverage, but Goldsman’s quoted name for the preview was “Preview One.” The distinction matters: the accounts describe an earlier preview version, not a finished edition ready for distribution.

| Theatrical Batman Forever | Released; Warner Bros. Japan lists a Blu-ray of the theatrical feature. | The version released in 1995. The catalog lists bonus material, including deleted scenes and Joel Schumacher’s audio commentary. |
| “Preview One” | Unreleased; the latest located report does not establish a public release date. | Goldsman described it as darker in 2024. In 2025, he said it was incomplete, with large portions lacking visual effects. |
Warner Bros. Japan’s Blu-ray listing is for the released theatrical film and its listed extras; it does not identify Preview One as included. Availability of that edition may vary by region.
Is the cut complete, and will Warner Bros. release it?
In a later update published July 14, 2025, SuperHeroHype quoted Goldsman via The Hollywood Reporter: “We found it. It exists and it’s incomplete, but more complete than you would think.” The report says large sections still lack visual effects and that Goldsman continues to lobby for the cut. At SDCC 2024, Goldsman had described Warner Bros. as having come close to undertaking restoration amid changing studio circumstances. That was a description of an earlier effort, not a commitment to release the preview. The two updates are consistent: restoration had been considered, but Goldsman later described the cut as still incomplete.
The cited 2024 and 2025 reports establish neither a current studio-approved restoration plan nor a release date. They do not rule out private studio discussions; they simply do not confirm an approved plan or public schedule. Goldsman’s continued lobbying is not the same as Warner Bros. announcing a release.
