What the Supreme Court decided on July 16
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi left the existing restriction on release in place while the Union government considered objections to the film. In this context, “lift the stay” meant allowing release despite the Delhi High Court’s order; the Supreme Court did not do that at this hearing. It asked the filmmakers and opponents to await the Centre’s committee and urged the committee to act promptly after hearing them, as reported by The Tribune.
The matter was listed for July 21. That was the next date in the proceedings, not a final ruling on whether the film could ultimately be released.
Why the film’s release was under challenge
On July 10, 2025, the Delhi High Court stayed the release while the Union government considered a revision application challenging the Central Board of Film Certification’s clearance. The dispute involved the Centre’s revisional powers under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, 1952. A connected petition was filed by Mohammed Javed, an accused in the murder case. He argued that releasing the film while the criminal trial was pending could prejudice a fair trial. That was the petitioner’s contention, not a finding by the Supreme Court that the film would affect the trial.
The Tribune reported that counsel for Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind argued the film vilified Muslims. This, too, was a party’s submission rather than an established description or judicial conclusion. The producers sought release and challenged the stay.

What happened after the July 16 hearing
Later reporting places the July 16 direction in a sequence of subsequent decisions:
- July 21, 2025: The Centre’s decision allowed release subject to six edits, according to Bar & Bench.
- July 25, 2025: The Supreme Court declined to extend the stay and directed objectors to seek relief in the Delhi High Court, as reported by Bar & Bench.
- August 7, 2025: The Delhi High Court refused the accused petitioner’s interim request to stop the release. The film was scheduled for release on August 8, according to LiveLaw.
The reported August 8 schedule establishes the planned release timeline; it does not establish the film’s current streaming or home-media availability.

What the July 16 hearing did—and did not—settle
- It did: leave the Delhi High Court’s temporary release stay in force while the Centre’s review proceeded.
- It did not: decide the ultimate legality of the film’s release or resolve every challenge on its merits.
- It did not: make July 21 the final outcome; that was the next listed date, followed by later decisions.
The Tribune reported Justice Surya Kant as saying: “If the movie is released, there will be irreparable damage. If it’s not, then you (producers) can be compensated. Also, don’t miss movie culture. More the suspense the better it does.” The exact wording is reported by the newspaper; an official transcript for this quotation has not been established.
