Ryan Gosling’s “strange relationship” with Burt Reynolds was not a romance between the two actors. Gosling was a young teenager when they worked together on the 1996 film Frankenstein and Me; years later, he joked that Reynolds’s apparent interest was really directed at his mother, Donna. Gosling said she enjoyed the attention, but added: “Nothing happened.”
What Ryan Gosling said about Burt Reynolds and his mother
During a May 1, 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Gosling looked back on working with Reynolds when he was about 13 or 14. He said he initially thought the older actor had taken a shine to him. In retrospect, Gosling joked, Reynolds’s attention was aimed at Donna.
“Then I realized I have a really beautiful mom,” Gosling said, according to contemporaneous reports from Us Weekly and Entertainment Tonight. He described the attention as “secondary shine,” with “the real shine” going to his mother.
Did Burt Reynolds and Donna Gosling have a relationship?
Gosling’s account does not establish that Reynolds and Donna dated or had a relationship. He said she liked the attention, then clarified: “Nothing happened.” The “crush” framing used in some headlines is shorthand for Gosling’s humorous recollection of what he believed Reynolds’s interest to be, not confirmation of a romance.

How the anecdote connects to Frankenstein and Me
Gosling and Reynolds worked together on the 1996 film Frankenstein and Me, when Gosling was a young teenager. Reports about the interview also recount Reynolds being friendly to Gosling, signing items and offering advice. The “beautiful mom” story was Gosling’s comic way of reconsidering that set dynamic years later.
When Gosling told the story
Gosling shared the anecdote on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on May 1, 2024; entertainment coverage followed on May 2. Us Weekly and Entertainment Tonight reported his comments, as did WRAL/CNN. The story is best understood as Gosling’s retrospective, joking account—not independently verified evidence of a relationship between Reynolds and Donna.
