Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s relationship timeline
2012: They meet at the MTV Video Music Awards
Rihanna recalled first meeting Rocky when he joined her performance of “Cockiness” at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. She has said that knowing each other then did not immediately turn into a romance. In her May 2022 Vogue interview, she described the relationship taking shape years later.
Late 2019: Dating begins, according to Rihanna
In a 2024 Interview magazine conversation quoted in British Vogue’s relationship timeline, Rihanna said, “it wasn’t until the end of 2019 [that we got together].” She also described approaching the change cautiously after years of knowing Rocky.
2020: The relationship becomes serious and public
Rihanna said the relationship became serious during the COVID lockdown. She recalled a summer 2020 road trip from Los Angeles to New York and said, “He became my family in that time.” The Associated Press dates the couple’s public relationship to 2020; that public milestone is distinct from the earlier dating start Rihanna later described. The AP’s September 2025 report also summarizes their relationship timeline.
