No. The photo circulated after Rio de Janeiro’s Operation Contenção did not show a woman called Japinha do CV. Police told news outlets that it showed Ricardo Aquino dos Santos, a 22-year-old man from Bahia. The identity of the person supposedly known as Japinha remains disputed, so the image and the alias should not be treated as a confirmed match.
Who was in the photo?
After Operation Contenção in Rio de Janeiro on 28 October 2025, an image of a deceased person spread on social media and messaging groups with a caption claiming it showed Japinha do CV. On 4 November, police told Folha de S.Paulo and CNN Brasil that the person in the image was Ricardo Aquino dos Santos, a 22-year-old man from Bahia—not a woman identified as Japinha. Folha also reported that no woman was among the identified dead from the operation. Folha de S.Paulo and CNN Brasil reported the police clarification.
The false caption connected a real image to an unverified identity. The police account as reported by those outlets identifies the person pictured; it does not establish who, if anyone, used the Japinha alias.
Who is Japinha do CV?
Coverage of the rumor has not established one confirmed identity behind the name. A 7 November fact-check by Aos Fatos described inconsistencies in the online story and distinguished the woman whose photos circulated from the supposed criminal persona. Folha said searches of public records under names and aliases attributed to the alleged figure did not confirm the identity or presence in the named communities; it also noted that the names appeared incomplete. These gaps do not prove that a separate person does or does not exist. They mean the available reporting does not verify the persona as a specific individual. Aos Fatos

What did Maria Eduarda say?
Maria Eduarda, known online as Penélope, publicly said she was alive and denied being Japinha do CV. CNN Brasil reported her statement on 12 November 2025. She said: “Essa tal de Japinha que estão falando aí… não sou eu. Essa menina não existe. Japinha não existe” (“That Japinha they’re talking about… that’s not me. That girl doesn’t exist. Japinha doesn’t exist.”). Her denial is evidence of what she said about herself; it does not independently settle whether a different person used the alias. CNN Brasil
What is established about the operation’s death toll?
Folha’s 4 November 2025 report described the operation’s toll as 121 deaths. That is the figure reported by Folha at that time, not a final count independently established here. The same report’s key point for the viral image is that police said none of the identified dead was a woman.

How the rumor was corrected
- 28 October 2025: Operation Contenção took place in Rio de Janeiro’s Penha and Alemão complexes. Posts subsequently circulated the image with the false attribution.
- 4 November 2025: Police told Folha and CNN that the image showed Ricardo Aquino dos Santos, a 22-year-old man from Bahia; Folha reported no woman among the identified dead.
- 7 November 2025: Aos Fatos published a fact-check outlining inconsistencies in the online identity story.
- 12 November 2025: CNN Brasil reported Maria Eduarda’s denial that she was Japinha and her statement that she was alive.
The sequence matters: the viral claim came first, followed by police clarification about the person pictured and later reporting that exposed confusion around the alias. The photo is not evidence that Japinha died.
