John Lennon was killed on December 8, 1980. Photos connected with the anniversary fall into two distinct groups: images made outside the Dakota on the day he died, and later photographs of people gathering to remember him. The date and subject matter matter—an anniversary image of the Imagine mosaic is not a photograph of Lennon’s final day.
Photographs made on December 8, 1980
Photographer Paul Goresh’s collection describes a sequence of photographs he made outside the Dakota on December 8, 1980. According to the collection, Goresh waited outside the building with a Minolta XG1 and began photographing Lennon and Yoko Ono when they emerged in the late afternoon. These images record a particular day; descriptions of individual frames below are the collection’s account.
Frame 19: Lennon signing an album
The collection identifies frame 19 as showing Lennon signing a copy of Double Fantasy for Mark David Chapman. It says the photograph first appeared on the front page of the New York Daily News on December 10, 1980. Attribute the identification and publication history to the collection when using or describing the image. View the Paul Goresh Collection.
Frame 24: a claim about the final photograph
The Goresh collection describes frame 24 as the last frame on the roll and the last picture of Lennon alive. That consequential identification should be presented as the collection’s description, not as an independently verified forensic conclusion.

Photographs from later December 8 anniversaries
Later anniversary photographs show remembrance at Strawberry Fields, not the events of December 8, 1980. TIME’s caption identifies a photograph of the Imagine mosaic taken on December 8, 2015, the 35th anniversary of Lennon’s death. TIME also reported on fans gathering there on December 8, 2016, the 36th anniversary. Keep the anniversary year in a caption whenever it is known, so a later tribute cannot be mistaken for a scene from the day Lennon was killed. Read TIME’s 2016 report and view its photo caption.
Where the anniversary gatherings take place
Strawberry Fields is a five-acre landscape memorial near Central Park’s West 72nd Street entrance, across from the Dakota, where Lennon and Ono lived. Its Imagine mosaic serves as a gathering point for visitors paying tribute. Yoko Ono conceived it as a landscape rather than a conventional statue; its design includes an international garden and the mosaic, with “Imagine” at its center.

The Central Park Conservancy says Strawberry Fields was dedicated on October 9, 1985, the 45th anniversary of Lennon’s birth. John Reddick, the Conservancy’s Director of Community Engagement, described the loss as “not just celebrity grief—it was a New York grief.” See the Central Park Conservancy’s history of Strawberry Fields.
How to caption and select photographs accurately
A useful caption tells readers what they are seeing, when the photograph was made, who made it, and where its provenance comes from. Distinguish among Lennon in a photograph made in 1980, a later image of the Dakota, and mourners or offerings at Strawberry Fields. For anniversary photographs, state the year rather than relying on “anniversary” alone.
