There is no verified figure for Philip Seymour Hoffman’s net worth. Reports about his estate at his death cite two different amounts: a 2014 filing described it as “$500,000-plus,” while later reports put it at approximately $35 million. Neither figure is established as a final, audited accounting, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or as a definitive net-worth total.
What was Philip Seymour Hoffman’s net worth?
The available sources do not establish a verified net-worth figure. They report estimates or information about the value of Hoffman’s estate after his death in 2014—not a current financial statement or a complete calculation of his assets and liabilities.
The most accurate short answer is that later reports described his estate as approximately $35 million, but a report on the will filing gave a different figure, “$500,000-plus.” The sources reviewed do not include a final inventory or accounting that resolves the difference.
Why do reports give different estate figures?
The will filing: “$500,000-plus”
The Guardian reported on February 20, 2014, that papers filed with Hoffman’s will valued the estate at “$500,000-plus.” The report said the exact value was unknown and described the filing as seeking to expedite early estate administration. It should be read as the amount stated in those papers, not as proof of the estate’s final value. The Guardian’s report

Later reports: approximately $35 million
In July 2014, the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Sun-Times reported an estate estimate of approximately $35 million. An American Bar Association article on celebrity estate planning also described Hoffman as having left an estate of approximately that amount. The ABA article is legal commentary, not the underlying probate accounting. Los Angeles Times; Chicago Sun-Times; American Bar Association
The cited sources do not explain why the amounts differ. They also do not establish a final estate value, total liquid assets, taxes, or the amount ultimately distributed. Calling either figure Hoffman’s definitive net worth would go beyond what these reports show.

The Guardian reported that Hoffman signed his will in 2004, when his eldest child was his only child. It said he left the bulk of his estate to his longtime partner, Marianne “Mimi” O’Donnell, who was named executor. The ABA article describes the will as leaving the residuary estate to O’Donnell and including a trust provision for Hoffman’s son Cooper if O’Donnell died before him. Hoffman’s two daughters were born after the will was signed.
The ABA article discusses New York’s treatment of children born after a will is made as a legal issue. That discussion does not establish a final court ruling or show how the estate was ultimately distributed.

The will also expressed Hoffman’s wish that his son grow up in or near New York, Chicago, or San Francisco, or visit those cities regularly. As quoted by The Guardian, it said: “The purpose of this request is so that my son will be exposed to the culture, arts and architecture that such cities offer.” The Guardian’s report on the will
