Phil Collins’s representative said his July 2025 hospital stay was for recovery after knee surgery and denied that he was in hospice care, according to The Independent. That clarification concerns the 2025 hospitalization; later interviews offer context about his mobility and performing, but do not establish his current medical status.
Why was Phil Collins hospitalized?
On July 28, 2025, The Independent reported that Collins’s representative said he was in hospital recovering from knee surgery. The statement addressed online claims that he was receiving hospice care and said those claims were not true. The report did not identify the hospital, specify the operation, give an admission or discharge date, or provide a medical record.
Rolling Stone Australia reported the following day that Collins was recovering in hospital after knee surgery and likewise described the hospice claims as unfounded.
What did Collins say about his health afterward?
January 2026: surgeries and mobility
In coverage of a BBC Eras interview with Zoe Ball published January 24, 2026, The Independent reported that Collins had discussed undergoing five knee surgeries and walking with assistance. Collins said, “I can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever.” He also described his health as “an ongoing thing.” These comments are a later account of his condition, not confirmation that he remained in hospital after July 2025. Collins also said in that interview, as reproduced by The Independent: “You know, I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do.” The remark describes the support he said he had at that time; it does not establish a hospice stay.
May 2026: performing plans
In a May 23, 2026 report on an appearance on BBC Breakfast, RTÉ quoted Collins saying, “I’m healthier now than I have been for quite a while.” The same report said he could not see himself performing live again and recounted that complications had led to five knee surgeries. What is known about Collins’s earlier injuries?
Reports have linked Collins’s long-running difficulty playing drums to lasting nerve damage following a spinal injury in 2007. That history is distinct from the representative’s explanation of the July 2025 hospital stay: the reports cited here do not identify a specific knee diagnosis or describe the type of surgery.
