Pete Townshend did not announce that The Who would end in ten years. In a March 27, 2025 interview with Andy Greene of Rolling Stone, he said he had “maybe 10 years left as a creative”—a personal estimate of his own creative horizon. The interview also coincided with the release of Pete Townshend: The Studio Albums, an eight-CD collection of his solo work, released March 28, 2025.
What did Pete Townshend say about The Who’s future?
In Andy Greene’s March 27, 2025 Rolling Stone interview, Townshend reflected on the band’s identity and his relationship with Roger Daltrey. “I think what we call the Who is just Roger and me,” he said, describing the group’s legacy and their continued connection, including exchanging emails and arguing about politics.

In the same interview, Townshend said, “I’ve got maybe 10 years left as a creative.” He was talking about his own creative life, not setting an end date for The Who. He also discussed ongoing work in music, theatre, art and books. The interview did not announce a formal retirement, breakup or final date for the band.
What is in Pete Townshend: The Studio Albums?
The Who announced the collection on February 6, 2025, and gave its release date as March 28, 2025. The eight-CD set contains seven solo studio albums and a second, music-only presentation of Psychoderelict. Its standard Psychoderelict disc retains the dialogue. The albums use their original track listings; the official announcement says there are no additional bonus tracks.

The Who’s official announcement says the albums were newly remastered by Jon Astley. The box also includes a 28-page booklet with a foreword by Townshend, notes by Who archivist Matt Kent, and rare photographs and memorabilia. The Townshend official-site announcement likewise describes the collection as using the original album track listings without bonus tracks.
How do Townshend’s solo albums relate to The Who?
Townshend’s solo work is not simply a collection of songs rejected by the band. In the official announcement, he put it this way: “These solo songs are therefore not Who exclusions or out-takes, they are part of a story that may well have been very different had I not made some poor decisions in the early ’80s.” He also described solo writing as an outlet for self-expression and said he found it impossible to see his Who and solo careers as entirely separate.

The albums trace different parts of that wider story. Who Came First gathered recordings connected to Townshend’s Meher Baba tribute work and Life House demos; some of those demos later fed into The Who’s Who’s Next, according to the band’s announcement. The collection also includes Empty Glass, released in 1980. The Who’s 2025 announcement notes that “Let My Love Open the Door” reached the US Top Ten and that the album peaked at No. 5 on the US Billboard chart.
