Peter Greene, the character actor known for playing Zed in Pulp Fiction and Dorian Tyrell in The Mask, died at 60. He died at home in New York City on December 12, 2025, according to reporting by the Associated Press and The Guardian. In February 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that New York City’s medical examiner ruled his death accidental.

How did Peter Greene die?

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner determined that Greene’s death was accidental. The cause was given as a “gunshot wound of left axilla with injury of brachial artery,” according to the Los Angeles Times report published February 19, 2026. The newspaper explains that the axilla is the underarm and that the brachial artery runs from the shoulder toward the elbow crease. The reported finding establishes the manner and injury, but not the precise circumstances; there is no basis here to infer how the shooting happened.

How old was Peter Greene?

Greene was 60. The Guardian obituary gives his death date as December 12, 2025, and says he was born October 8, 1965, in Montclair, New Jersey. The Associated Press reported that his manager, Gregg Edwards, confirmed Greene died at home in New York City.

Who did Peter Greene play in Pulp Fiction?

Greene played Zed, a security guard, in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film. Greene said he initially turned down the part because the script’s approach was not to his taste. In an interview excerpt published by ABC News, he recalled that Tarantino returned and let him approach the scene his own way. Greene said, “We just improvised the whole scene and we kept the language that was there.”

What other movies was Peter Greene in?

Greene’s career included demanding lead performances as well as supporting parts in crime films and thrillers. The Associated Press identified Laws of Gravity (1992) and Clean, Shaven (1993) among his early leading roles. The Guardian describes Clean, Shaven as an expressionistic drama about a man living with schizophrenia, with fractured sound design and a jittery performance by Greene; it was his film debut, according to the obituary.

  • Judgment Night (1993)
  • The Usual Suspects (1995)
  • Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995)
  • The Rich Man’s Wife (1996)

His manager Gregg Edwards told the Associated Press, “He was just a terrific guy.” Edwards also described Greene as “Arguably one of the greatest character actors on the planet; has worked with everybody,” in comments published by ABC News.
