Yes. Showtime’s 2018 limited series Escape at Dannemora is based on the real June 2015 escape of inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. The escape involved a route cut through cell walls and prison infrastructure, assistance from employees, and security failures documented by New York State’s Inspector General. Matt was killed during the manhunt on June 26; Sweat was captured two days later.
What happened at Clinton Correctional Facility?
Clinton Correctional Facility is a maximum-security prison in the Village of Dannemora in northern New York. Shortly after 11 p.m. on June 5, 2015, Sweat and Matt left their cells through holes cut in the rear walls. They descended behind the cells through pipes and confined spaces, then followed underground routes and openings they had prepared over preceding months. Around midnight, they emerged from a manhole onto a street outside the prison. Staff discovered the empty cells during the morning count on June 6.

The New York State Office of the Inspector General’s investigation of the 2015 escape says the plan began in January 2015. Its account describes a coordinated effort rather than a sudden breakout.
Who helped the escapees, and what failed?
The Inspector General found that civilian tailor-shop supervisor Joyce Mitchell brought hacksaw blades into the prison and later supplied additional tools. Officer Eugene Palmer’s improper practices allowed contraband and inmates to pass without required searches or metal-detector screening.

The official findings describe multiple weaknesses that allowed the plan to proceed: problems with gate screening, night counts, cell searches, inspections, and management oversight. In a June 6, 2016 release, Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott called the failures “egregious and inexcusable.” The investigation included sworn testimony from more than 170 witnesses and reviewed tens of thousands of pages of records.
How did the manhunt end?
Authorities searched for the escapees for three weeks, following thousands of leads. On June 26, 2015, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection team encountered Matt near Malone. He was armed and was shot and killed. On June 28, a New York State Police sergeant encountered Sweat near the Canadian border. Sweat fled commands to stop, was shot, and was taken into custody.

The Inspector General reported that more than 1,300 officers from local, state, federal, and Canadian agencies were involved at times. Separately, the New York State Police annual report says over 1,400 personnel were assigned per day at the manhunt’s peak; these are differently framed measures, not interchangeable totals.
What did the escape cost New York State?
The Inspector General put New York State law-enforcement overtime at $22.8 million—approximately $23 million. That figure covers state overtime alone and excludes costs incurred by federal and local agencies, other states, and other countries. The report also found that more than 400 inmate bed checks should have occurred over approximately 85 nights; a properly conducted check could have detected Sweat’s absence.

How closely does the series match the real events?
The documented events provide a factual framework for viewing the series: the timeline, the physical escape route, the documented roles of the people involved, the institutional failures identified by the Inspector General, and the manhunt’s outcome. The Inspector General’s report establishes findings about the real escape; it does not assess the show’s scenes, dialogue, or character portrayals. Those findings alone therefore cannot establish whether the dramatization is accurate scene by scene.
