This is a retrospective guide to those picks and their historical release dates—not a claim that they are available on Netflix now. Licensed-film availability varied by country, and the published dates were not entirely consistent across schedules.
The selection below is grouped by what you might want to watch. Its “best” label reflects an editorial roundup, not an objective ranking.

Holiday stories and high-pressure December thrills
That Christmas — animated holiday stories
The roundup listed this Netflix Original for December 5, 2024, describing it as a set of animated holiday stories. Netflix’s official synopsis says: “That Christmas follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys!” The Netflix Media Center has the official film page.
The exact historical date is worth qualifying: the roundup listed December 5, while TIME’s December 1 schedule listed December 4. Those are conflicting published listings, not proof of a single universal release date. Netflix’s second-half 2024 engagement report later recorded 60 million views for the film; Netflix calculates views by dividing total hours viewed by runtime. That figure measures viewing, not quality. The same report said animated titles made up 10 of its 25 most-viewed films in the half-year and included That Christmas among its examples.
#1 Best Overall
Carry-On — holiday-set airport thriller
Listed for December 13 as a Netflix Original, Carry-On is the pick for a tense thriller set amid holiday airport travel. Choose it over a seasonal comedy if you want suspense rather than a family-centered holiday story.
War stories and large-scale action
The Six Triple Eight — a WWII period story
The roundup listed this Netflix Original for December 20. Its subject is a U.S. Army women’s battalion during World War II, making it the period drama choice among the four Originals.
Midway — military action
This licensed film was listed for December 1 in the US-focused roundup. It offers large-scale military action for viewers who want a war film rather than a contemporary thriller. Because it is a licensed arrival, that listing does not establish availability outside the United States or beyond the historical date.

Mad Max: Fury Road — high-intensity action

Drama, comedy, and science fiction
Mary — biblical drama
Listed as a Netflix Original for December 6, Mary is the roundup’s biblical drama. It is a fit for viewers looking for a religious and historical subject rather than holiday comedy or action.
Shiva Baby — anxious comedy-drama
This licensed film was listed for December 7 in the US-focused roundup. Its compressed, anxiety-driven comic setup suits viewers after an uncomfortable, character-centered comedy-drama rather than a broad crowd-pleaser.

Subservience — AI-themed science-fiction thriller
Listed for December 5 as a US-focused licensed arrival, Subservience brings an AI theme to a science-fiction thriller. It rounds out the choices for viewers more interested in speculative technology than historical drama or romance.

How to interpret the dates and availability
The dates above are the roundup’s historical listings, not guarantees of current access. It divided its choices into Originals presented as global arrivals and licensed films headed to Netflix in the US; licensing windows can differ by country and change over time. TIME’s December 2024 schedule is a useful cross-check, but it also lists series and specials and does not provide a competing ranking of the films.
