“They predicted Trump, right?” The short answer is that The Simpsons did not foresee the future. Its apparent predictions are better explained by satire, close observation of public life, coincidence and hindsight. A joke can resemble a later event without showing that its writers knew what would happen.
Why the show’s jokes can look like predictions
The Simpsons draws comedy from public figures, political anxieties, emerging trends and familiar story patterns. Those subjects change over time, and some jokes later appear to match real events. Once a match is noticed, it is easy to share the striking example and overlook the many jokes that did not come true.

Showrunner and executive producer Al Jean put the creators’ position plainly in an Associated Press retrospective published in 2026: “Well, the predictions are accidental. We’re not from the future.” Associated Press
What the Trump example actually shows
The 2000 episode “Bart to the Future” imagines Donald Trump as a former president. Writer Dan Greaney later explained that the scenario was intended as a warning about a political trajectory he thought was plausible, not as a claim of foreknowledge. The Guardian reported his description of Trump as “the logical last stop before hitting bottom.” The Guardian

That context matters: the episode’s value as satire comes from extending an existing political concern into an exaggerated future. A plausible extrapolation can look prescient after the fact, but that is different from predicting a specific outcome.
Why the 9/11 image needs caution
A frequently circulated image from the show is said to resemble the September 11 attacks. The resemblance has been discussed as an uncanny coincidence, but coverage of the show’s wide-ranging cultural and political references does not establish a specific production intention behind that image. Without reliable evidence about how the scene was made and what it was intended to mean, resemblance alone cannot settle the claim. It should be described as a retrospective association, not proof that the show forecast the attacks.
How to check another supposed prediction
Before repeating a viral claim, compare the circulating clip or image with the episode itself. These checks help distinguish a specific, dated depiction from a loose resemblance:

- Find the original episode and air date. A verifiable date establishes whether the scene appeared before the event it supposedly predicted.
- Check how specific the match is. A distinctive, concrete detail is stronger evidence of a close match than a broad theme such as political turmoil or new technology.
- Consider what was already in public culture. If the person, trend or idea was already prominent, a joke about it may reflect observation or extrapolation rather than foreknowledge.
- Verify the clip in context. An isolated image may omit surrounding dialogue or a scene’s actual meaning. Confirm that the clip is authentic and unedited before drawing conclusions.
- Notice what the compilation leaves out. A collection of apparent hits does not show how many similar jokes missed. Without a defined set of claims and a defensible method, odds or probability figures would be misleading.
The Irish Times has discussed the wider phenomenon of supposed matches and coincidence, but an individual claim still needs to be checked against its original episode and scene. The Irish Times

There is an important difference between a show depicting a recognizable event in advance and an image or joke that seems similar after an event occurs. The first can be checked against a dated original; the second may be a thematic resemblance strengthened by hindsight. The Trump scenario has a reported satirical purpose, while the 9/11 image’s specific intention is not established by the available coverage.

The strongest explanation is not that the writers could see the future. They made jokes about a world they observed; sometimes reality later supplied an uncanny echo.
