Lulu Simon criticized Richard Gere after he sold the former Simon family estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, to a developer. She said Gere had promised to care for the land when he bought it. That promise has not been independently verified as a condition in the sale contract, and later local reporting said the house was demolished.
What Lulu Simon said about the sale
In Instagram Stories reported on July 9, 2025, musician Lulu Simon—Paul Simon’s daughter—criticized Gere over the property she described as her childhood home. Us Weekly reported that she posted on July 8: “HE BOUGHT MY CHILDHOOD HOME. PROMISED HE WOULD TAKE CARE OF THE LAND AS CONDITION OF HIS PURCHASE. PROCEEDED TO NEVER ACTUALLY MOVE IN & JUST SOLD IT TO A DEVELOPER AS 9 SEPARATE PLOTS :).” Us Weekly also reported her post, “Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere—I do!”
Those statements are Simon’s allegations. The reports reviewed do not establish that Gere made a preservation promise as part of the sale agreement, or independently confirm her claim that he never moved in. Realtor.com covered the posts and sale, while The Daily Beast reported seeking comment from Gere but did not publish a response. Realtor.com · The Daily Beast
What happened to the New Canaan property
Realtor.com reported that Gere bought the brick Colonial from Paul Simon in 2022 for about $10.8 million. In November 2024, Gere sold the estate for $10.75 million. Realtor.com identifies the buyer as SBP Homes; CT Insider identifies Brookwood Hills LLC as the buyer and reports that it is registered to James Hoffman of SBP Homes, citing Connecticut business records. The reviewed reporting does not include the deed or establish the sale’s exact terms. Realtor.com · CT Insider

From proposed subdivision to reported demolition
In 2025 coverage, the property was described as slated for a nine-lot subdivision. The Daily Beast quoted SBP Homes project manager Adam Sherer saying, “We’re very excited about this project. From the beginning, our goal was to thoughtfully accommodate a wide range of interests in how the property would be developed.” That is the developer’s stated position, not an independent assessment of the project or its preservation measures. Later, CT Insider reported that the former Simon-Gere house had been demolished for the subdivision. The Daily Beast had also reported salvage efforts ahead of demolition, but the available coverage does not establish precisely which building elements, if any, were recovered. CT Insider

What is established—and what remains unverified
- Established in published reporting: Paul Simon sold the New Canaan property to Gere in 2022; Gere sold it in 2024; and later local coverage reported the house’s demolition.
- Attributed to Lulu Simon: the claim that Gere promised to care for the land, never moved in, and sold it for division into nine plots.
- Not established by the reviewed reports: that a preservation promise appeared in the sale contract, Gere’s reasons for selling, or an on-record response from Gere.
The distinction matters: the public record in these accounts supports the timeline and reported outcome, but does not verify the disputed promise or establish its legal status.
