Contemporary reports said he died after a long illness but did not identify a cause of death.
What was Bernard Shaw’s career?
Shaw served as a San Francisco police officer for 15 years, according to a 2013 San Francisco Chronicle report republished by CT Insider. He joined Hearst Corporation in 1983 and later became its vice president of corporate security.
Hearst Corporation president and chief executive Steven R. Swartz described Shaw’s tenure in a statement reported by the Chronicle: “For three decades Bernie served Hearst Corporation with loyalty and distinction.”
How did Shaw meet and marry Patty Hearst?
Shaw met Patricia Hearst in 1976, after she was released on bail while awaiting appeal. The Boston Globe’s obituary says he was among the bodyguards hired by the Hearst family and was part of her security detail. His first marriage was dissolved in 1977, according to the Globe.

In 1979, after President Jimmy Carter commuted Hearst’s sentence, she and Shaw married in an Episcopal ceremony at a naval base in San Francisco Bay. The Globe also recounted Hearst’s memory of a wedding gift from her parents: “My parents gave us a Sears vacuum cleaner as a wedding present.” She said they thought the marriage would not last, recalling a 1996 appearance on Conan O’Brien’s program.
What was the background to Patty Hearst’s case?
The FBI’s case history recounts that Hearst was kidnapped in 1974 by the Symbionese Liberation Army, later arrested and convicted, and then had her sentence commuted by Carter. She subsequently received a presidential pardon. That case brought Shaw into public accounts of Hearst’s life, but his own work included a long career in corporate security.
