Patrick Mahomes joined in and tried to take the microphone as the song continued. Contemporary reports described Kelce’s singing as slurred and characterized him as appearing intoxicated; no medical finding or blood-alcohol measurement was reported.
What Kelce sang at the Chiefs’ parade
The Chiefs celebrated their 25–22 overtime win over the 49ers with a parade and rally in Kansas City on February 14, 2024. As the rally wound down, Kelce took the microphone. Sporting News reported that he began with the Chiefs’ tomahawk chop tune before switching to Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places.” He invited the crowd to sing along and altered the words to needle the team Kansas City had just beaten.
The Independent transcribed the changed line as: “Blame it all on my roots, I showed up in boots and ruined the Niners affair.” That is the outlet’s transcription of Kelce’s performance, not an official lyric sheet. The Associated Press described the song as a dig at analysts who had written off the Chiefs.
How Mahomes joined in
Mahomes sang along as Kelce continued, then tried to take the microphone as the song ended. Sporting News says Mahomes appeared to be trying to end the show; The Independent also reported that he attempted to pull the microphone away. Neither player was quoted explaining his intent during this exchange.

What “inebriated” means in coverage of the moment
Sporting News described Kelce’s lyrics as “heavily slurred,” and contemporary coverage characterized him as appearing intoxicated. Those descriptions are observations about the performance, not proof of Kelce’s condition: the cited reports provide no medical assessment or measured blood-alcohol level.

The singing was one brief episode in the Chiefs’ post-championship rally, not a separate event. The Associated Press also reported Mahomes telling the crowd: “Three times. First time in NFL history. We’re doing it. Love y’all.” That remark concerned the team’s ambitions and celebration, rather than the exchange over Kelce’s microphone.

A shooting occurred near the rally site later that day. It was a grave, distinct event and not part of the singing episode.
