A new Sonic universe film is scheduled for December 2028, but it is not coming one year after Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Paramount lists Sonic 4 for March 19, 2027, in the United States; Variety reports the untitled spin-off for December 22, 2028, there—an interval of about 21 months. Paramount’s Australia and New Zealand schedule gives the later film a December 21, 2028 date for that region.
What is the release date for the Sonic spin-off?
Variety reported on December 1, 2025, that Paramount had set December 22, 2028, for an untitled Sonic spin-off movie in the United States. Separately, Paramount Pictures Australia and New Zealand’s regional schedule lists an “UNTITLED SONIC UNIVERSE EVENT FILM” for December 21, 2028. These are dates from different territories and sources, not necessarily a contradiction: release schedules can vary by region.

Paramount’s official Sonic the Hedgehog 4 page lists March 19, 2027, in the United States. Comparing that date with Variety’s reported US date for the later film gives an interval of about 21 months, rather than one year.
How the two release dates are reported
| Film or project | Date | Territory and source |
|---|---|---|
| Sonic the Hedgehog 4 | March 19, 2027 | United States; Paramount’s official film page |
| Untitled Sonic spin-off | December 22, 2028 | United States; Variety’s December 1, 2025 report |
| “UNTITLED SONIC UNIVERSE EVENT FILM” | December 21, 2028 | Australia and New Zealand; Paramount regional schedule |
The one-day difference between the reported US date and the Australia/New Zealand listing should be retained with its territory attribution. A regional schedule date should not be presented as the US release date.

What is known about the 2028 film?
Paramount’s Australia and New Zealand schedule uses the label “UNTITLED SONIC UNIVERSE EVENT FILM.” Variety describes the project as a spin-off. The sources confirming its schedule do not establish a final title, plot, director, cast, or lead character. In particular, they do not confirm that the film will focus on Shadow. Calling it a Shadow movie or describing a story would go beyond what has been announced in the cited schedule and trade report.
Where the film fits in the Sonic movie timeline
SEGA describes the theatrical movies as adaptations of its Sonic game franchise. In a January 22, 2025, announcement, the company said Paramount had dated Sonic 4 for March 19, 2027, in the US, and reported that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had surpassed $425 million worldwide at that time. That box-office figure is SEGA’s dated report, not a current total.

Paramount Pictures Australia later published a Sonic 4 title-reveal video on March 19, 2026, saying the film would arrive in cinemas in March 2027. The official Paramount US page supplies the more precise US date: March 19, 2027.

For a franchise catch-up, Paramount’s Japan home-entertainment page identifies Blu-ray and DVD editions of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That page is specific to Japan; editions and availability vary by market. It is a prior film, not a tie-in to the untitled 2028 project. No streaming home for the 2028 film has been established.
