The practical setback is the longer wait: ABC’s May 12, 2026 fall-schedule announcement listed The Rookie as a returning series debuting in 2027, rather than placing it in the fall lineup. The announcement did not give a reason for the timing or name a premiere date. ABC later reiterated that Season 9 would launch in 2027. The schedule shift is not evidence that the series was canceled or that a previously confirmed Season 9 date was pushed back.

ABC also announced that the franchise spinoff The Rookie: North is planned for 2027. The two shows sharing a return year does not establish that one caused the other’s scheduling.
When does Season 9 come back?
ABC has confirmed only the year: 2027. TheWrap reported on July 28, 2026, that the season was expected in January 2027. Treat January as a reported expectation, not a date confirmed by ABC; the cited network announcements do not specify a day or month.

Is The Rookie canceled?
No. ABC’s schedule identifies the series as returning, and its Season 8 finale announcement says Season 9 will launch on ABC in 2027.
Some uncertainty surrounded the show before renewal. In a July 28 interview with TheWrap, actor Eric Winter said, “We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back,” and, “We even shot an alternate ending to the show.” Those comments describe the uncertainty at the end of Season 8 before the renewal; they do not indicate that Season 9 is currently in danger.

What is known about the new season?
By the time TV Insider spoke with star Nathan Fillion, Jenna Dewan, and showrunner Alexi Hawley at San Diego Comic-Con on July 30, 2026, filming had reportedly begun only days earlier. Their comments offer early character teases, not a complete or necessarily final season synopsis.
Nolan and Bailey
Nolan and Bailey were facing a long-distance relationship after Bailey’s work took her to Washington, D.C. Fillion said, “We deserve a break,” while Hawley posed the question, “So, how do you slow down when you’re an overachiever?” about Bailey’s direction.

A new rookie for Nolan
Hawley also teased, “I think Nolan is navigating a new rookie this season at some point.” ABC’s series description identifies John Nolan, played by Fillion, as the LAPD’s oldest rookie, whose life experience, determination, and humor help him keep up with younger colleagues. The tease does not establish further plot details.
How did the Season 8 finale perform?
ABC reported that the Season 8 finale reached 9.25 million total viewers after seven days across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+, and digital platforms. ABC also reported a 2.1 Adults 18–49 rating over that seven-day window. These are network-published multiplatform figures, not live-TV-only ratings. For the finale, ABC identified Nielsen National Live+7 Day Big Data Plus Panel Program Ratings and ABC Multiplatform+7 Day Data.

ABC said the season averaged 9.04 million total viewers and a 2.05 Adults 18–49 rating over seven days across those platforms, compared with 8.19 million viewers and a 1.59 rating in the prior season. The network described this as the show’s fourth consecutive season of growth in both measures. ABC noted a methodology change for 2024–25 comparisons, so the figures should be understood in that context rather than treated as a like-for-like independent ratings analysis.
