Neighbors contacted city officials over what they understood to be a school operating in a residential neighborhood. The family’s spokesperson described it as a pandemic-era homeschool pod; news coverage said city officials considered the home-based use inconsistent with local rules. The city was reported to have said the operation had shut down by August 2025. Its status after that has not been established in the reporting summarized here.
What neighbors said they saw
Coverage of the story said Crescent Park neighbors noticed children being dropped off and picked up at the couple’s Palo Alto residence and raised concerns with city officials. The Irish Times described the group as 14 children, including two of Zuckerberg and Chan’s daughters. That number is a figure reported by the newspaper, not an independently verified count.
Michael Kieschnick, identified in the coverage as a Crescent Park neighbor, described the effect on residents this way: “No neighborhood wants to be occupied. But that’s exactly what they’ve done. They’ve occupied our neighborhood.” That is his characterization of the neighborhood experience, not an official city finding.
Why the arrangement became a city-use question
The family’s spokesperson described the arrangement as a homeschool pod formed during the COVID-19 pandemic to give children stability. Futurism reported that it continued after the pandemic began, while follow-up coverage focused on whether the activity functioned as a school or other use that required local approval.

Media accounts summarized Palo Alto’s concern as involving residential rules for businesses or private schools that bring more traffic than normal and employ people who do not live at the home. The underlying municipal-code text and any formal adjudication are not established in the reporting summarized here, so that description should not be treated as a legal determination about this property.
Local approval and the state filing were separate issues
Two different questions appear in the coverage:
- Local land use: Whether the activity at the Hamilton Avenue property was allowed under Palo Alto rules or needed a permit.
- State private-school filing: Whether a Private School Affidavit had been filed for the relevant school year. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that state officials said one had been filed for 2024–25 but not for 2025–26 as of early August 2025.
A state affidavit filing does not, by itself, settle whether a particular activity complied with city land-use requirements. The two issues concern different authorities and should not be conflated.

What officials reportedly said about the outcome
The Chronicle reported that Palo Alto said the home-based school had shut down and that the city had not received a permit application for daycare or another educational use at the Hamilton Avenue property. Those statements describe the status reported in August 2025; they do not establish what has happened since. The later status of the property’s use or any permit application is unresolved in the available reporting.

The headline’s word “sketchy” is a dramatic framing, not a finding that the family broke the law. The concrete story is a dispute over a home-based group described by the family as a homeschool pod and characterized in coverage as potentially involving a school or business use subject to residential rules. Neighbors reportedly brought their concerns to officials, and the city was reported to have said the operation had ended by August 2025. The available accounts do not establish a formal violation decision or a current status.
