Lost on Everest is a 2020 National Geographic documentary about the search for Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, who disappeared with George Mallory during their 1924 Everest summit attempt. The film follows a modern expedition investigating whether the climbers reached the summit and looking for Irvine and the camera he was believed to have carried. A 2024 discovery of remains believed to be Irvine’s added evidence about his fate—but did not settle the summit mystery.
What is Lost on Everest about?
Released in 2020, Lost on Everest follows professional climbers, filmmakers, and experts led by journalist Mark Synnott and National Geographic photographer Renan Ozturk. Ozturk directed the one-hour documentary, according to its Disney+ listing.

The expedition investigates what happened to Mallory and Irvine, who vanished while attempting to become the first people to reach Everest’s summit. Its search focuses on Irvine’s remains and the camera he was believed to have carried—an object that could potentially shed light on whether the pair reached the top. The film premiered on National Geographic Channel on June 30, 2020, according to the National Geographic announcement.
What happened to Mallory and Irvine?
George Mallory and Andrew “Sandy” Irvine were last seen on June 8, 1924, during their attempt to climb Everest. Mallory’s remains were found in 1999, but Irvine’s location remained unknown for a century. Irvine was 22 when he disappeared, according to National Geographic’s 2024 report.

What did the 2024 discovery establish?
In September 2024, a National Geographic team led by photographer and filmmaker Jimmy Chin found a boot and sock embroidered “A.C. Irvine” on the Central Rongbuk Glacier below Everest’s north face. A foot was inside the boot. National Geographic described the remains as believed to belong to Irvine; his relatives volunteered DNA samples for comparison, so the report did not conclusively establish the identity.
Chin called the discovery “the first real evidence of where Sandy ended up.” Irvine’s great-niece Julie Summers said, “I’m regarding it as something close to closure.” Both are personal reactions reported by National Geographic, not definitive confirmation of identity or of what happened during the 1924 climb.
Did Mallory and Irvine reach Everest’s summit?
The 2024 find does not answer that question. It provides evidence about where Irvine may have ended up, but does not prove whether he and Mallory reached the summit. The 2020 expedition ended without resolving the question, and theories about the pair’s final route, a fall, or a successful ascent should be kept distinct from what the discoveries confirm.
The camera remains central to the mystery because evidence from it might help clarify the climb. The film documents the search, not a conclusive solution.
