Matthew Sweet suffered a stroke in Toronto on October 12, 2024, while touring. Friends Catherine Lyons and Russell Carter organized a GoFundMe to help with medical and recovery costs. Reports later that month said Sweet had returned to the United States and entered rehabilitation in Omaha; the available reporting does not establish his medical condition as of October 8, 2026.
What happened to Matthew Sweet?
Sweet suffered the stroke during the early days of a national tour. Billboard Canada reported that his longtime manager, Russell Carter, confirmed the news on October 22, 2024, and said Sweet had been admitted to Toronto Western Hospital for urgent care before being transferred to a rehabilitation center in Omaha. Billboard Canada’s October 2024 report described the stroke as the reason the tour was canceled.
In an October 24, 2024 report, Exclaim! said Sweet had returned to the United States and was admitted to rehabilitation. Those are historical updates from 2024, not confirmation of his current treatment or recovery.
What did the GoFundMe say?
The campaign, titled “Support Matthew Sweet’s Long Term Stroke Recovery,” was organized by Catherine Lyons for Sweet and Russell Carter. Its description said Sweet needed a medical flight from Toronto to the United States with medical staff aboard. Organizers wrote that the hospital care in Toronto was instrumental in saving his life.
