In a December 2024 update, Matthew Sweet said he feared he might never play guitar again, but would try to make music. The statement followed a stroke he suffered in Toronto while on tour in October 2024. It is a dated account—not a new health update—and the reports cited here do not establish his current medical status as of October 2026.
What happened to Matthew Sweet?
Sweet suffered a stroke in Toronto during the early days of a tour in October 2024, according to a fundraiser organized by Catherine Lyons and Russell Carter. The fundraiser said the stroke forced him off the road and that he was transferred to rehabilitation for extended therapy.
Sweet later recalled seeking help before he and his party had even checked into their hotel. In a profile published by Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals, he said: “We hadn’t even checked into the hotel,” Matthew said. “Our road manager was checking in and I said, ‘Call an ambulance.’”
What did Sweet say about playing guitar and making music?
TheWrap reported on December 8, 2024, that Sweet’s update said, “I may never play guitar again.” He also expressed his intention to try to make music. The statement conveyed his fear at the time; it was not a definitive medical prognosis.

What rehabilitation progress was publicly reported?
A December 17, 2024 profile from Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals said the stroke affected Sweet’s left side and speech. The provider described a course of physical, occupational, vision, and speech therapy.
The hospital reported that Sweet progressed from being unable to sit up independently to walking 400 to 500 feet with an assistive device. That is the provider’s dated progress snapshot from 2024, not a measure of his present abilities or an independent clinical assessment. The profile said he went home in time for Thanksgiving and was looking ahead to outpatient therapy and goals for 2025; those were plans reported at the time, not a current treatment schedule.

How recent is the information?
The personal statement was reported in December 2024, and the rehabilitation profile was published that month. Rolling Stone published an interview with Sweet on June 7, 2025, described in search results as his first interview since the stroke and as covering his recovery and outlook. That interview is the latest recovery reporting located here, not proof that no later statement exists. These dated reports do not establish Sweet’s health or ability to play guitar in October 2026.
