The clearest documented sequence is a work-related meeting in 2006, Carey’s public confirmation of a relationship by 2017, and Tanaka’s announcement of their separation in December 2023. The available reporting does not establish the exact start or end date of the romance or the private reasons for the separation. The AP said Carey had not issued a public statement about the breakup at the time of its report; Tanaka’s characterization of the split as mutual and amicable is his account, not a joint statement from the couple.
