Mariah Carey was named MusiCares’ 2026 Person of the Year on October 21, 2025. She received the honor at the 35th annual benefit gala on January 30, 2026, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. MusiCares recognized both her musical career and her work supporting communities and people in need.
Why MusiCares honored Mariah Carey
MusiCares cited Carey’s musical legacy and sustained commitment to helping communities. Its announcement highlighted relief for people affected by Hurricane Katrina and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Camp Mariah, a program she founded with the Fresh Air Fund to support underserved young people. The organization also pointed to her advocacy for health, education, and social welfare initiatives.
Theresa Wolters, MusiCares’ executive director, said Carey’s influence extended beyond her artistry and described her support for disaster relief, youth empowerment, and people facing barriers to opportunity. Recording Academy and MusiCares CEO Harvey Mason jr. called Carey a “true creative force and once-in-a-generation talent.” Those remarks express the organization’s reasons for selecting her.
When and where the gala took place
The benefit was held Friday, January 30, 2026, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Recording Academy’s announcement and the Associated Press’ post-event report agree on the date. BMI’s event listing displays January 31, but the AP report, published that day, says the gala took place the previous Friday.
