Major record labels sued Uncharted Labs, the company behind AI music service Udio, alleging that it copied copyrighted recordings to train its music-generation model without permission. The “BBL Drizzy” track became a prominent example in public discussion of Udio, but the complaint did not establish that the track caused the lawsuit. Later reporting described licensing settlements with Universal Music Group and Warner, while Sony pursued separate litigation.
Who sued Udio, and what is “BBL Drizzy”?
Udio is an AI music-generation service operated by Uncharted Labs, Inc. The “BBL Drizzy” reference is a cultural touchpoint: the AI-generated track was associated with Udio and appeared in public discussion about AI music and sampling. It is context for the dispute, not proof that the track itself prompted the lawsuit.
On June 24, 2024, recording companies filed a complaint against Uncharted Labs in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The complaint alleged that Udio copied sound recordings without authorization to train its model and that generated outputs could resemble protected works. Those statements are the plaintiffs’ allegations, not findings by a court. Read the complaint filed June 24, 2024.
What did the labels allege?
The labels’ central claim was that Udio used copyrighted recordings as training material without obtaining permission. Their complaint also raised related copyright claims and argued that the company could not avoid liability by relying on fair use. Fair use is a contested legal issue in the pleadings; the complaint itself does not decide whether training on copyrighted music is lawful.

In the complaint, plaintiffs’ counsel wrote: “Udio cannot avoid liability for its willful copyright infringement by claiming fair use.” That is the plaintiffs’ position, not a judge’s conclusion.
What did the lawsuit seek?
The plaintiffs sought injunctive relief and damages. The complaint requested statutory damages of up to $150,000 per work infringed, or actual damages and profits. The $150,000 figure was a requested statutory-damages ceiling cited in the 2024 filing—not an award, a finding of infringement, or a count of works a court determined were infringed. Do the settlements settle the copyright question?
No. A settlement and licensing agreement can resolve a business dispute between the parties who made it, but it is not a judicial decision that copyright training is lawful or unlawful. The reported Universal and Warner arrangements do not determine the merits of claims involving other parties or cases. Their precise terms and scope were not publicly established in the cited reports.

What is the current status of the cases?
As of October 8, 2026, the procedural posture of the original litigation and Sony’s separate 2026 case has not been confirmed from a primary court docket here. The available reporting describes settlements involving Universal and Warner and separate litigation pursued by Sony, but it does not support a claim that every Udio-related dispute is resolved or establish a final court outcome.
