Ian McKellen’s Magneto and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier reunite in a new Avengers: Doomsday teaser, with James Marsden’s Cyclops also appearing. The short promotional clip uses chess imagery and a Magneto voiceover to evoke the longtime friends and occasional adversaries, but it offers little detail about the film’s plot.
What happens in the teaser?
Ars Technica’s January 6, 2026 report describes a brief sequence that begins with Xavier’s familiar wheelchair and a chessboard, then shows the older faces of Xavier and Magneto. The voiceover is attributed to Magneto, followed by an action shot of Cyclops.
Magneto’s narration says: “Death comes for us all. That’s all I know for sure. The question isn’t ‘are you prepared to die?’ The question is ‘who will you be when you close your eyes?’” The lines belong to the character’s teaser voiceover; they are not presented as a statement by Ian McKellen outside the role.
Who appears, and what does the footage confirm?
- Magneto: Ian McKellen.
- Charles Xavier: Patrick Stewart.
- Cyclops: James Marsden, seen in an action shot.
The teaser report identifies these three characters in this footage. It should not be read as evidence that every announced cast member appears in the clip. Marvel’s 2025 cast announcement reporting had already identified Stewart and McKellen among the film’s cast, before the teaser report.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What does the teaser reveal about the story?
Not much beyond the reunion and its somber tone. The chessboard is a visual cue that can suggest the characters’ complicated relationship, but that is an interpretation, not confirmation of a particular conflict or outcome. The report says the promotional footage reveals little about the full film’s plot.
Where this teaser fits in the rollout
Ars Technica described this as the third teaser in a series. According to that January report, the first highlighted Steve Rogers and the second Thor; the clips had been shown in cinemas ahead of Avatar: Fire and Ash before becoming publicly available. Those details describe the rollout as reported at the time, not the current availability of each clip.
