What the Palace had publicly disclosed
In its statement on 5 February 2024, Buckingham Palace said diagnostic tests had identified “a form of cancer” during a hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, and that regular treatment had begun. The statement did not identify the cancer or describe the treatment regimen. Read the Palace statement.
The Palace also said the King would postpone public-facing duties during treatment, while continuing State business and official paperwork as usual. Those are distinct parts of his role: stepping back from public engagements did not mean that he had stopped carrying out State work.

How the public-facing schedule changed in 2024
On 26 April 2024, the Palace announced that the King would shortly return to public-facing duties following a period of treatment and recuperation. Read the April announcement. On 12 December 2025, Marie Claire reported that a King’s spokesperson said treatment would continue, but its schedule could be reduced in the New Year. The 2024 “New Year” in Sky News’s headline meant the transition from 2024 to 2025. The available reports here do not establish the King’s precise treatment schedule as of October 2026.
