King Charles and Prince William did not attend Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration Mass on May 18, 2025. Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, represented the King. Buckingham Palace did not give a reason for the King’s or William’s absence in contemporaneous reporting.
Who represented King Charles?
The Duke of Edinburgh represented the King at the Mass. Buckingham Palace’s statement, quoted by ITV News on May 10, 2025, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh will represent His Majesty at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.” The statement identifies representation of the King; it does not describe Prince Edward as representing the United Kingdom.
Why were the King and Prince William absent?
The Palace did not provide a reason for either absence in the contemporaneous account. Marie Claire reported on May 10, 2025, that no reason had been given for the King or Prince William missing the event. That describes the public explanation in that report, not whether a private reason existed. Speculation about protocol, travel or scheduling should not be treated as an official explanation.
When and where was Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration Mass?
The Vatican listed the “Holy Mass for the Beginning of the Pontificate of Pope Leo XIV” for Sunday, May 18, 2025, at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square. The official listing is available on Vatican.va. The pontiff presided at the Mass.

What happened at the Mass?
In its post-event account, Vatican News reported more than 200,000 pilgrims attended, alongside leaders from around the world and representatives of Christian denominations. The attendance figure is Vatican News’s reported count, not a separately audited total.

No. The Royal Family said the King and Queen’s state visit to the Holy See in October 2025 was connected to the Jubilee Year and ecumenical work between the Church of England and the Catholic Church. That later visit provides context about a separate engagement; it does not establish why the King or Prince William missed the May inauguration Mass.
