WFAA, the Dallas–Fort Worth ABC affiliate, cut to a commercial during Jimmy Kimmel’s May 25, 2022 monologue about the Uvalde school shooting. Contemporaneous reports attributed the interruption to the station’s automated commercial system after it extended its local newscast—not to an order from ABC network leadership. Kimmel initially said he did not know whether the cutaway was intentional; he later said he understood it was a mistake.
What happened during the broadcast?
The night after the May 24, 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Kimmel delivered a taped opening monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live! without a studio audience. ABC News reported that the shooting killed 19 children and two teachers. Kimmel spoke about the tragedy from an empty studio, but viewers watching WFAA’s Dallas–Fort Worth broadcast did not see the entire monologue: the station went to a commercial break in the middle of it.
The interruption affected WFAA’s local broadcast. The available contemporaneous reporting does not establish that ABC’s network leadership directed the break.
Why did WFAA go to commercial?
WFAA had extended its 10 p.m. local newscast to provide additional coverage of the Uvalde shooting, delaying the schedule. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Washington Post reported that the station attributed the interruption to its automated commercial system, which triggered a break during Kimmel’s monologue. The Star-Telegram reported that viewers missed much of the segment before the broadcast returned.

WFAA said the break was triggered in error and apologized. The Washington Post reported that the station posted Kimmel’s full monologue online.
Did Kimmel “lose his cool” or accuse ABC of censorship?
The phrase “lost his cool” is not supported by the reporting on his reaction. In a public post after the interruption, Kimmel said, “I do not know whether our @ABCNetwork affiliate @wfaa cut away from my monologue tonight intentionally or inadvertently but I will find out.” That expressed uncertainty about what had happened; it was not confirmation that ABC ordered a cutaway.

The Washington Post later reported that Kimmel said he understood “this mistake was made unintentionally.” The accounts point to a local station’s reported automation error, not an established intentional censorship decision by ABC.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is an ABC network program, while WFAA is the local ABC affiliate serving Dallas–Fort Worth. A local station can adjust its schedule for local coverage, and the reports describe this interruption as occurring on WFAA’s broadcast. That distinction matters: the fact that viewers saw a commercial during an ABC program does not, on its own, show that the network ordered the break.
