John Cena said he felt physically at his limit and had been discussing retirement with WWE for a long time. He also said WWE saw 2025 as the right moment for a farewell tour, as the sport’s popularity was rising. His explanation points to both personal physical limits and deliberate timing—not one independently proven, exclusive cause.

What reason did John Cena give for retiring?

After announcing his retirement plans at WWE’s Money in the Bank event in Toronto on July 6, 2024, Cena told reporters he was “physically at [his] end,” according to TIME’s account of the press conference. He said he had been discussing retirement with WWE for a long time. He also said WWE considered 2025 the right time for a farewell tour, given the sport’s recent rise in popularity.

Those remarks explain the decision as Cena described it: his physical limits, a long-running conversation with WWE, and a chosen moment for a public send-off. They do not establish that WWE alone made him retire or that one specific medical condition forced the decision.

Was an injury the reason?

In the cited reporting, Cena said he was physically at his limit, but no particular injury or diagnosis was established as the cause of his retirement. It is more accurate to describe his explanation as a statement about his overall physical condition than to attribute the decision to an unnamed injury.

When did Cena announce his retirement, and what did he say?

At Money in the Bank in Toronto on July 6, 2024, Cena announced that 2025 would be his final year competing in the ring. He named the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 2025 as planned appearances during that final run. CBS News reported his remarks and announcement from the event and post-show press conference.

Addressing the possibility that he might return after retiring, Cena said: “People say they’re walking away, and two years later they come back. I want to set the record straight right now, I’m done. This is it.” He also said, “There were many before me, there will be many after. I guess what I have left to do is say my thank yous before that chapter closes.”

When was John Cena’s last WWE match?

Cena’s final match took place on December 13, 2025, headlining Saturday Night’s Main Event at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. WWE had announced the date on September 30, describing the event as the close of his year-long farewell tour. Its announcement of his final match identifies the event and date.

Did retirement mean Cena left WWE?

No. The retirement he announced was from in-ring competition, not an immediate end to his relationship with WWE. In 2024, Cena said he expected to remain part of WWE’s extended family. In December 2025, USA Insider reported that he had a five-year WWE ambassador contract and planned to mentor talent; those were reported plans at the time and may change. USA Insider’s report covers that post-retirement role.

How WWE described the farewell

When WWE announced Cena’s final match, Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque said: “John’s contributions to WWE are immeasurable. There are no words that can truly relay how much he means to this business.” The company also reported that Cena’s 2024 retirement announcement generated more than 65 million social-media views in its first 24 hours, calling it WWE’s most-viewed social segment since WrestleMania XL. That figure is WWE’s own report, not an independently audited count; it appears in a July 2024 TKO/WWE press release.
