Jon Stewart defended Tony Hinchcliffe’s roast-comedy style, not the Puerto Rico insult itself. On The Daily Show the evening after Donald Trump’s October 27, 2024 rally at Madison Square Garden, Stewart said he found Hinchcliffe funny while criticizing the campaign’s decision to put a roast comedian before a political audience shortly before Election Day.
What did Tony Hinchcliffe say at the rally?
At Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally in New York on October 27, 2024, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe said: “I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” The Associated Press reported that his remarks also included lewd and racist comments about Latinos, Jewish people, and Black people. AP’s account of the rally and backlash.

The comment prompted immediate political backlash. Trump campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said: “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” CNN’s October 28 transcript.
How did Jon Stewart respond?
On the following evening’s The Daily Show, Stewart acknowledged the political cost of the booking, then distinguished that decision from Hinchcliffe’s established comedic style. Stewart said: “There’s something wrong with me. I find that guy very funny. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you.” He showed examples of Hinchcliffe’s earlier roast material as context for why the comedian’s performance fit his usual act. Stewart also said: “Now obviously, in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before Election Day and roasting a key voting demographic? Probably not the best decision by the campaign, politically.” His point was that a style built around provocative insults is a poor fit for a campaign event when the target is a voting community the candidate needs to reach.
Did Stewart defend the Puerto Rico joke?
Not in the sense of endorsing that specific insult. Stewart’s comments support a qualified defense of Hinchcliffe’s comedy and his right to perform in his usual roast style. At the same time, Stewart criticized the campaign’s judgment in booking that act for a political rally and highlighted the political risk of targeting a key voting demographic. Treating his remarks as uncomplicated approval of the Puerto Rico line erases that distinction.

Why did Stewart call Hinchcliffe funny?
The Associated Press describes Hinchcliffe as a stand-up comedian who specializes in roast comedy, a form built around personal and often tasteless jokes. AP also notes his prior Comedy Central roast appearances and history of controversy. That background helps explain Stewart’s reference to Hinchcliffe’s established style; it does not determine whether the rally was an appropriate venue for it. Associated Press coverage.
How did others react?
AP reported condemnation from Democrats and Puerto Rican celebrities. Ricky Martin shared a clip with the caption “This is what they think of us.” Critics included Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Republican Senator Rick Scott. The campaign’s public statement, meanwhile, distanced Trump and the campaign from the joke. These responses show why Stewart’s distinction between a comedian’s general act and the campaign’s decision to feature it became central to the discussion.
