For Season 2 of Honest Renovations, Jessica Alba and Lizzy Mathis said they wanted to show a wider range of family structures and household needs while keeping the renovations practical. In a MobileSyrup interview published August 21, 2024, they discussed the balance between bold design and function, and the vulnerability families face when opening their homes to a renovation crew.
What Alba and Mathis wanted to expand in Season 2
The hosts described broadening the kinds of families and needs represented on the show. Mathis pointed to single-parent and multigenerational households, while Alba said the season reflected children at different ages and stages. That wider range matters because a home that works for one family may not work for another: the renovation has to respond to the people living there.
Alba framed the design challenge as combining a striking transformation with everyday usefulness: “I would say that we have a nice balance of being able to make bold decisions, but then also having functional design.” The aim, as she described it, was not simply a dramatic reveal, but a result that looks distinctive and serves the family.
Why the renovation process is personal
Mathis emphasized that inviting a crew into a home can feel exposing. “I think that you have to realize that when a family lets you into their house, we’re strangers to them,” she said. She described the hosts’ approach as taking time and meeting families with openness, rather than treating their homes as just another project.

In a separate Audacy interview published August 26, 2024, Mathis said the show’s goal was to avoid a conventional renovation format: “But we really strive to not be typical.” She said the families remain at the heart of the story and that the takeaways should feel personal, not limited to the before-and-after reveal. Audacy also reported that partners and sponsors funded the renovation work and that one shared budget was allocated across the houses; its article text does not name those partners.
