Johnny Depp has not been confirmed for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. At D23 in August 2026, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he and his collaborators were talking with Depp and working on a screenplay—evidence of discussions, not a signed deal or finalized Disney casting announcement.
What did Jerry Bruckheimer say about Johnny Depp and Pirates 6?
Speaking at D23 on August 17, 2026, Bruckheimer said: “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.” The statement establishes that discussions with Depp and screenplay work were underway, while Bruckheimer expressed hope rather than announcing a completed agreement. The Guardian reported the comments, as did The Independent.

Has Depp officially been cast?
No finalized casting or signed agreement is established by Bruckheimer’s comments or the reports cited here. “We’re talking” signals discussion; it is not the same as confirmation that Depp will reprise Captain Jack Sparrow. The reports also do not establish a release date for a sixth film.
Bruckheimer’s August 2025 comments made the possibility conditional. As reported by Variety, he said of Depp: “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it.” He also said at the time that the team was still working on the screenplay and had not yet found the right version. Variety’s report attributes the remarks to an Entertainment Weekly interview.

What is known about the sixth film’s script?
In a September 30, 2025 interview with TheWrap, Bruckheimer said, “We’re working on a script,” and stressed that the film depended on getting the writing right: “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.” He said two scripts had existed, one had dropped out, and the team was pursuing the other. He also said Ted Elliott had worked on the current script and another writer had been brought in “to fill in the blanks.” These are details from his 2025 update; the August 2026 comments confirm screenplay work continued, but do not independently update the writers or the earlier script status. Read TheWrap’s interview report.
What about Margot Robbie’s involvement?
In the same September 2025 update, Bruckheimer said Robbie was “still involved” in some capacity. That dated remark does not confirm that she will star in the sixth film, identify her role, or establish that her involvement remains unchanged. No settled cast or story direction is established by the reports cited here.

Where does Pirates 6 fit in the franchise?
Five Pirates of the Caribbean feature films have been released. The latest, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, came out in 2017. The Guardian reported in 2026 that the series had earned more than $4.5 billion worldwide; it did not provide a more exact total or a methodology for that figure.
The practical distinction is between a franchise with a long-running commercial history and a sixth film whose script is still being developed. Bruckheimer’s latest comments make Depp’s return a live possibility, but the reported discussions are not a casting announcement.
