On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 22, 2024, Jeremy Renner said he focused first on breathing after the snowplow accident that nearly killed him. He also described the experience as cathartic to discuss and said surviving it had changed how he viewed the rest of his life.
What Renner said about surviving the accident
In the extended interview, Renner recounted being caught in the tracks of the snowplow. TheWrap reported that he said he had about 38 broken bones, including 14 breaks in his ribs. Describing his immediate focus, he told Fallon, “I’ve got to worry about breathing first.” Those are Renner’s recollections as reported from the interview, not figures from an independent medical-record review. The Tonight Show’s description says the conversation covered Renner’s time on life support, his recovery, and returning to film season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown. TheWrap reported Renner said he was on life support for “three or four days.”
How he said the experience changed his outlook
Renner told Fallon that talking about his injuries felt “pretty cathartic” and “quite healing.” He also described a lasting shift in perspective: “I won’t have a bad day for the rest of my life. It’s impossible, right? There’s that gift.” He added, “I think I can achieve anything at this point.” These are personal reflections, not medical guidance or a claim that recovery follows the same course for everyone.

What happened in the January 2023 snowplow accident
The Fallon conversation came more than a year after the accident. In an earlier interview with Diane Sawyer, reported by ABC News in April 2023, Renner said he was using a snowplow to help his nephew move a stuck family truck during a snowstorm. He recalled falling from the machine and being run over, and said he had not set the parking brake before opening the door. That detail comes from his earlier account, not the Fallon interview.
