The performance opened around a flaming trash can that Barker used as a percussion surface before he moved to a drum kit.
How the Fallon performance unfolded
Jelly Roll and mgk began the performance of “Lonely Road” around a flaming garbage can, singing the refrain as Barker tapped out a rhythm on its rim. Barker then moved to a drum kit, while backing singers supported the performance. Later, the performers made their way to Fallon’s desk area. Billboard’s account of the staging describes the unusual prop-led opening and movement across the set.
The performance aired September 30, 2024, according to iHeart and Billboard. Before the song, Jelly Roll spoke with Fallon about his relationship with mgk, saying they had “started on rocky roads and made amends.” He also called mgk “one of the greatest guys” and said he loved him “to death,” as reported by iHeart. Those remarks reflect Jelly Roll’s description of their relationship, rather than a full account of its history.
What “Lonely Road” draws on
mgk and Jelly Roll released “Lonely Road” on July 26, 2024, according to Apple Music’s US catalog listing and Universal Music Japan’s release notice. The song draws on John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”; Universal describes the older song as its motif, while Rolling Stone Australia calls it an interpolation. It is more accurate to describe the track as drawing on or interpolating Denver’s song than as a cover.
