Jay-Z received the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards in Los Angeles on February 4, 2024. In accepting it, he paid tribute to hip-hop figures who came before him, challenged the Recording Academy’s treatment of rap on the televised show, and questioned why Beyoncé had never won Album of the Year despite her record number of Grammy wins.
What award did Jay-Z receive at the 2024 GRAMMYs?
Jay-Z, born Shawn Corey Carter, was presented with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award during the main GRAMMY Awards ceremony on February 4, 2024. The New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment identifies Carter as born and raised in Brooklyn.
The Recording Academy says Jay-Z was the award’s second individual honoree. Dr. Dre received the inaugural award at the 2023 GRAMMY Awards. The Academy and its Black Music Collective created the honor in Dr. Dre’s name to celebrate achievement and influence. The city’s February 12, 2024, announcement said Carter was recognized for his contributions to the industry and for using his platform as an artist and entrepreneur to make a positive impact on the music community.
What is the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award?
The award recognizes a career’s contributions and influence in music. It is a special honor, not a competitive category in which nominees contend for a yearly prize. The Recording Academy’s account of its creation describes the award as celebrating Dr. Dre’s achievements and influence; its later honoree sequence places Jay-Z second after Dre.

There is a similarly named honor that can cause confusion: at the Recording Academy Honors event during GRAMMY Week on February 1, 2024, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz received Recording Academy Global Impact Awards. Those were separate presentations from Jay-Z’s Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the main ceremony three days later.
What did Jay-Z say in his acceptance speech?
Jay-Z began by recognizing hip-hop greats who preceded him, then addressed the Recording Academy’s history of sidelining rap, particularly in the televised ceremony. The Associated Press reported that no rap categories were included in that year’s telecast. Jay-Z urged the Academy to improve, saying, “We want you all to get it right,” and then, “At least get it close to right.”

His remarks framed the award as both a personal honor and an occasion to press for more meaningful recognition of hip-hop. Rather than treating the moment only as a celebration of his own career, he used the platform to point to a broader gap between rap’s cultural importance and its place in the televised awards show.
Why did Jay-Z mention Beyoncé?
Jay-Z turned to his wife, Beyoncé, and her Grammy record. The Associated Press reported that he highlighted the fact that she had won more Grammys than anyone else but had never received Album of the Year. He asked: “Most Grammys, never won album of the year. How does that work?”

The point was not that Beyoncé was receiving an award that night; Jay-Z was questioning how the Academy’s highest-profile album honor had aligned with her record of wins. His question sharpened his criticism of the institution’s recognition decisions without changing the nature of the award he had just received.
