John Lithgow is officially cast as Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s new Harry Potter series. The reaction reported so far is mixed: some fans are wary of replacing the familiar film cast, while others hope a television adaptation can follow the books in greater detail. Those are reported viewpoints, not the results of a representative poll.
What is confirmed about Lithgow’s casting?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced Lithgow as Dumbledore alongside five other cast members. The official Wizarding World series guide and The Guardian’s April 14, 2025 report confirm the announcement.
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| John Lithgow | Albus Dumbledore |
| Janet McTeer | Minerva McGonagall |
| Paapa Essiedu | Severus Snape |
| Nick Frost | Rubeus Hagrid |
| Luke Thallon | Quirinus Quirrell |
| Paul Whitehouse | Argus Filch |
Lithgow takes over a role played in the films by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. Dumbledore is Hogwarts’ headmaster and becomes a mentor to Harry, so the recasting places Lithgow in a part strongly associated with two earlier performances.
Why are some fans conflicted?
The Guardian’s reporting describes several different expectations, rather than a single fan consensus. Some viewers feel the original film cast set a standard that will be difficult to match. Others see a new television adaptation as a chance to spend more time with the characters and hew more closely to J.K. Rowling’s seven books. Some also questioned the choice of an American actor for Dumbledore.

Attachment to the film performances
Harris and Gambon are the obvious comparison points for viewers who grew up with the films. That attachment can make a new casting feel like a high bar, even before audiences have seen Lithgow’s interpretation.
Hope for a fuller book adaptation
The series is a new adaptation of the books, not a continuation of the film storyline. HBO described it as “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books,” as quoted by the Associated Press on July 14, 2025. A longer format may allow more room for story and character detail, though that possibility is not a guarantee of how the finished series will handle the material.

Questions about casting and identity
The Guardian reported concern from some viewers about casting a US actor as Dumbledore. Its interviews also captured a broader argument over whether an actor’s performance should matter more than resemblance to a familiar screen portrayal. These are separate questions: a viewer can welcome a new interpretation while still caring about how it differs from the films.
What did fans interviewed about the casting say?
The Guardian spoke with fans at King’s Cross station. Grace Whitehill, 25, from London, said she was looking forward to seeing what the creators made, but worried that a version too far from the books could spoil her experience. Her comments reflect both anticipation and caution about the adaptation.

Aurelia Jumeaucourt, a 30-year-old consultant from Paris, defended Paapa Essiedu amid criticism of his casting as Snape, saying, “[Essiedu] is not the problem – he’s a good actor in everything he does,” and, “As long as he’s a good actor, I don’t care what he looks like.” That comment was about Essiedu and the wider casting debate; it was not a response specifically about Lithgow.
These interviews illustrate the range of reactions, but they cannot establish how Harry Potter fans overall feel. No representative poll or quantified measure of opinion is cited in the reporting.

How does the series differ from the films?
The official Wizarding World guide identifies the project as a new series based on the books. Its first season is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the title used for the first book in the UK. The series therefore offers a fresh adaptation rather than a continuation of the film continuity.
That distinction matters to the Dumbledore debate: Lithgow is not being presented as a replacement within the existing film story. He is playing the character in a separate adaptation, with its own cast and approach to the source material.

When is the new Harry Potter series expected?
As of October 8, 2026, the official Wizarding World guide lists a Christmas 2026 debut on HBO and HBO Max where available. It says production is underway and that a second season is on its way. Platform access may vary by territory, and schedules can change.
The Associated Press reported on July 14, 2025 that production had begun at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and then expected a 2027 debut. That was an earlier schedule snapshot; the newer official guide lists Christmas 2026. The Guardian described the production as designed to run for more than a decade, which is a reported plan rather than a guaranteed production duration.
Who is John Lithgow?
The official Wizarding World guide describes Lithgow as a six-time Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner, as well as a BAFTA and Oscar nominee. It also notes that he won the 2025 Olivier Award for Best Actor for Giant. Those credits establish a substantial stage and screen career, but they do not determine how audiences will receive his Dumbledore.
