This is an editorial selection, not an official ranking. Cena retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025, making the list a retrospective on his WWE career.
How to judge Cena’s best matches
A great match can be memorable for more than its moves. This selection weighs championship or career stakes, the story between the wrestlers, crowd atmosphere, match format and distinctive presentation. ESPN’s retrospective offers one useful set of notable bouts, while WWE.com’s 2012 countdown—reported by WrestleView—is a historical reference point, not a current consensus or definitive ranking.
Seven John Cena matches worth revisiting
1. John Cena vs. Edge — Unforgiven 2006
The WWE Championship TLC match with Edge is the clearest pick for a rivalry that turned its animosity into a high-risk spectacle. ESPN highlights the bout’s danger and innovation; Cena won to reclaim the championship. WrestleView reported that WWE.com placed it first in its 2012 top five. ESPN’s retrospective and WrestleView’s report provide context for its place in the discussion.
2. John Cena vs. CM Punk — Money in the Bank 2011
This match’s stakes extended beyond the WWE Championship. Punk’s contract was about to expire, and the story had him aiming to win the title and leave; the Chicago crowd gave the hometown setting an unusually charged role. ESPN singles out the combination of the contract storyline and audience investment. WrestleView says WWE.com ranked it fifth in its 2012 countdown. ESPN’s retrospective discusses why the bout resonates.

3. John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels — Raw, April 23, 2007
Weeks after WrestleMania 23, Cena and Michaels had a separate match on Raw in London that ran nearly an hour. It belongs on a list of Cena’s best because it shows how much a long-form television match could accomplish without the scale of a major-event setting. ESPN calls it a Raw classic; WrestleView reports WWE.com ranked it second in its 2012 top five. ESPN’s retrospective covers the match and its reputation.
4. John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels — WrestleMania 23, April 1, 2007
This is the major-event counterpart to the London Raw match, not the same bout: Cena defeated Michaels to retain the WWE Championship at Detroit’s Ford Field. WWE’s event record reports attendance of more than 80,000. Its WrestleMania setting and championship stakes make it a central entry even for viewers who prefer the different rhythm of their later television match. WWE’s WrestleMania 23 record lists the result and event details.

5. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar — Extreme Rules, April 29, 2012
After Lesnar returned to WWE, this bout gave Cena a markedly more physical opponent and tone than the title-story and technical showcases elsewhere on this list. ESPN describes it as hard-hitting and notes that Cena won. It is a useful choice for seeing how he adapted when the story demanded a different kind of fight. ESPN’s retrospective includes the match.
6. John Cena vs. AJ Styles — Royal Rumble 2017
Cena and Styles produced a strong singles series across Money in the Bank and SummerSlam in 2016 and the Royal Rumble in 2017. For a single representative pick, the Royal Rumble match is a clear choice: ESPN identifies it among the series’ strongest candidates, and it gives this shortlist a later-generation rivalry rather than another entry from Cena’s earlier peak. The case here is for the series as a whole, not a claim that one bout is an undisputed winner. ESPN’s retrospective discusses the rivalry and its candidate matches.

7. John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt — WrestleMania 36
The Firefly Funhouse match is the deliberate outlier: an empty-arena, dreamlike presentation built around references to Cena’s career rather than a conventional contest. ESPN includes it as a distinctive choice, and it earns a place here for originality and storytelling, not because it resembles the hard-hitting or championship matches above. ESPN’s retrospective explains the match’s unusual approach.
