Cash’s voice, acoustic guitar and songs are at its center; decades later, his son John Carter Cash and co-producer David “Fergie” Ferguson shaped those performances with a new ensemble. The result is most compelling as an intimate look at Cash’s writing and musical instincts, though the added arrangements sometimes make it feel more like a completed studio album than a document left in its original form.
What is Johnny Cash’s Songwriter?
Released June 28, 2024, by Mercury Nashville/UMe, Songwriter contains 11 songs written solely by Johnny Cash, according to the official album materials. Cash recorded the source performances at LSI Studios in Nashville in early 1993, while between recording contracts. The recordings were described as demos, but they captured an album’s worth of songs.
John Carter Cash later rediscovered them and worked with Ferguson to build new arrangements around his father’s vocals and acoustic guitar. The album was issued digitally and on CD and vinyl; current availability of particular physical editions can vary.
How the later production changes the recordings
The crucial distinction is between the 1993 performances and the album listeners hear now. The voice and compositions belong to Cash; the surrounding band parts and released arrangements reflect the later production. This is not simply an archival tape presented untouched.

John Carter Cash described the approach as deliberately restrained: “We just went rudimentary,” he said. “We went straight to the roots, as far as the sound, and tried not to overly enhance it.” That is the makers’ stated intent. In practice, the added musicians give the songs definition and movement, but their presence also shifts the listening experience away from a strictly private voice-and-guitar document. The album’s appeal partly depends on which quality a listener values more: the intimacy of the source or the shape of a finished arrangement.
Marty Stuart, Dave Roe and Pete Abbott are among the musicians who play on the set. Dan Auerbach contributes guitar on “Spotlight,” and Vince Gill sings on “Poor Valley Girl.” Other named contributors include Ana Cristina Cash, Matt Combs, Mike Rojas, Russ Pahl, Sam Bacco, Kerry Marx and Harry Stinson.

What the songs reveal
The material moves among affection, hardship, faith, recovery and humor rather than following one narrow theme. The most revealing songs are those whose personal context is documented by the family and project materials; those accounts add perspective, but they need not be treated as the only possible readings.
Love, family and everyday stories
“I Love You Tonite” is presented in the official announcement as a love letter to June Carter Cash. “Poor Valley Girl” concerns June and her mother, Maybelle Carter. “Well Alright” takes a lighter route, imagining a romance that begins in a laundromat. “She Sang Sweet Baby James” follows a young single mother singing James Taylor’s song to soothe her baby, a small domestic scene rather than a grand statement.

Pain, service and recovery
John Carter Cash has said that “Drive On” draws on his father’s chronic pain and the hardships experienced by Vietnam veterans. He described Cash as seeking perspective and acceptance through the song. “Like A Soldier,” in the family’s account, grew from Cash’s struggle with addiction and recovery. Both songs also have a history beyond this album: they appeared in different recordings and arrangements on 1994’s American Recordings. Songwriter presents the earlier 1993 versions.
Returning to an earlier song
“Sing It Pretty Sue” revisits a song first released on Cash’s 1962 album The Sound of Johnny Cash. Its presence helps make Songwriter feel like a window onto a working songwriter revisiting familiar material as well as a collection of newly encountered compositions.

How Songwriter compares with American Recordings
The comparison is useful, but the albums serve different purposes. The 1994 American Recordings was part of Cash’s later career partnership with producer Rick Rubin; Songwriter returns to earlier performances, then completes them with later production. Even where the titles overlap, as with “Drive On” and “Like A Soldier,” these are not the same recordings.
Fernando Navarro’s August 17, 2024 review in El País’s Babelia section judged the recovered album a lesser work than Cash’s output with Rubin, while finding it an interesting route into the qualities that defined Cash before that reinvention. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus measurement. It captures the right frame for listening: Songwriter has historical and personal interest, but it does not need to displace the more celebrated Rubin-era albums to justify its release.

Is Songwriter worth listening to?
Yes, especially for listeners interested in Cash as a writer and in the contrast between an early-1990s performance and its later studio treatment. The album offers songs associated with love, family, pain and recovery, plus the particular presence of Cash’s voice and guitar. Its arrangements make the material accessible as a full-band record, while also leaving room to wonder what an unembellished release would have sounded like.
Approach it as a carefully assembled posthumous album, not as a definitive statement on the level of American Recordings or as a pure archival artifact. That distinction makes its strengths clearer: it preserves Cash’s performances and songs while showing how a later production team chose to bring them into public view.
