But his qualification matters: he also said he loved the script. The embarrassment he described was not a claim that he hated the movie; it came alongside the attention and enduring cultural afterlife of its famous threat.
What did Liam Neeson say about Taken?
In a report published July 31, 2025, Parade quoted Neeson from an interview with The New York Times: “I was a tiny bit embarrassed [by Taken].” He immediately added, “Don’t get me wrong, I did love the script.” Parade also reported Neeson’s joke that he had recorded the film’s famous speech in voicemails for his sons’ friends. Parade’s account of the 2025 interview is the attribution available for the newer remarks; the original Times interview could not be independently checked here.

Why did the role become so closely associated with him?
Taken follows Bryan Mills as he tries to rescue his daughter after she is abducted in Paris. The character’s threat to the kidnappers—often referred to as the “particular set of skills” speech—became the film’s most recognizable moment, and a source of repeated imitations and references. Neeson’s comments about voicemails suggest that the speech’s life beyond the film was part of the experience he was describing, rather than evidence that he disowned the role.
The film became a defining turn in Neeson’s screen career: after it unexpectedly succeeded, action scripts began arriving. In a 2012 interview with Now to Love, Neeson recalled that he thought the first film would be “a straight-to-video release.” He said that once it became a success he felt “a tiny bit embarrassed by it, a tiny bit, but then people started sending me action scripts.” The 2012 interview captures that earlier, career-focused explanation; it is distinct from the more recent remark reported by Parade.

How did Taken change the course of his career?
Neeson has described accepting the role partly because he expected a modest release and wanted to do physical work in Paris. Its success brought him a new stream of action roles, while the franchise itself continued with sequels released in 2012 and 2015. A 2012 Daily Beast profile reported a $26 million budget and more than $226 million in worldwide earnings; those are historical figures cited by that publication, not a current independently verified box-office total. The Daily Beast’s 2012 profile provides that contemporary context.

Not according to the remarks reported by Parade. The same 2025 report quoted Neeson discussing age and action roles separately: “There comes a point where audiences know, and I don’t want to insult an audience by me pretending I’m 50 years of age. I don’t want to do that. I have too much respect for audiences.” That is adjacent career context, not an explanation he gave for being embarrassed by Taken.
