Jon Stewart broke a coffee mug and cut his hand during The Daily Show on February 24, 2025. He kept talking through the injury, then showed the audience his bloodied hand wrapped in a paper towel. In a later episode, he said the cut had healed and that the show had switched him to a plastic mug with a sippy-cup lid.
What happened when Jon Stewart smashed the mug?
During a monologue about government efficiency, corporate subsidies and prescription-drug prices, Stewart slammed a coffee mug onto his desk and shattered it. The mug reportedly read “World’s Most Dad.” The break was described as an expression of frustration; reports said the resulting cut was accidental.
Stewart noticed the injury and initially kept his hand below the desk while continuing for several minutes. When he first acknowledged the cut, he joked, “I’ll be going to the hospital soon.” He later held up his hand, wrapped in a paper towel, and told the audience, “It’s fine!” TVLine placed the moment at about 17 minutes into the February 24 episode: TVLine’s account and clip.

The incident occurred in the episode of The Daily Show that aired Monday, February 24, 2025. Stewart’s monologue addressed DOGE and government spending, with Stewart arguing that debate about waste should also consider corporate subsidies and pharmaceutical pricing; that was his framing of the subject, not a neutral fact-check of those claims. Was Stewart’s hand okay afterward?
The initial coverage did not establish the full extent of the injury or whether Stewart went to a hospital. In a follow-up on March 3, he told the studio audience his finger had healed and had been glued back together. He also said the show had held a safety meeting and replaced his mug with a custom plastic one with a sippy-cup lid: “I am not allowed to have big boy mugs anymore.” TheWrap’s follow-up recounts his remarks.
Stewart recalled another on-air cut
In the follow-up, Stewart also recalled cutting himself during an earlier physical-comedy bit with John Oliver involving a margarita blender. The Los Angeles Times reported Stewart’s recollection that Oliver told him, “It’s just a flesh wound, stop making such a big deal of it!” That anecdote does not establish a fuller medical history or provide more detail about the earlier injury.
